Jennifer Weisselberg trusted her story to @business. After we published it, investigators almost immediately reached out to her for documents, leading them directly to a cut-and-dry case of tax fraud. Here's how they described that series of events:

Senator Collins’ office says we “took the word of someone who pled guilty,” but ProPublica conducted its own investigation of the former CEO’s assertions. We have the receipts. Our reporters independently corroborated much of the account by former Navatek CEO Martin Kao by reviewing a trove of evidence, legal records and interviewing dozens of people. And we reported that anti-corruption agents at the FBI were asking questions about Susan Collins as recently as late 2024. But after the reelection of President Trump, the FBI and DOJ teams handling public corruption probes were dismantled. Here is the full story: propublica.org/article/fbi-s…
The seven-year-old allegations made against Senator Collins and her staff in this piece are categorically false. There have never been any allegations of wrongdoing by the Collins for Senator campaign, and the campaign was never the target of the FBI investigation. ProPublica took the word of someone who pled guilty to five counts of money laundering, three counts of wire fraud, one count of bank fraud, and making false submissions to the FEC. As Martin Kao was awaiting sentencing, he began making outlandish charges about the Collins office, deflecting blame from himself and placing it on Senator Collins, including alleging that our office required contributions before taking meetings and engaged in extortion, pay for play, and bribery. The FBI and the Court obviously did not believe Kao, and in 2025 he was sentenced in two separate cases to prison terms of seven years and three years to be served concurrently, as well as an additional five years of supervised release at the end of his prison term. It is important to note that during the Biden Administration the FBI and the Department of Justice thoroughly investigated the Navatek matter. The Collins campaign cooperated fully with the FBI throughout the investigation, producing all of the documents it requested and serving as fact witnesses in official settings. In response to the allegations in the ProPublica piece, the FBI clearly stated that a suggestion of wrongdoing by Senator Collins or her staff is “totally false.” These issues were resolved in 2021, and the FBI has not contacted us about Martin Kao since then.

Exclusive: In late 2024, FBI agents were looking at Sen. Susan Collins’ role in a massive illegal bribery scheme alleged by a former federal contractor. Then Trump gutted the FBI and DOJ, leaving no one to carry on the investigation – it’s dead. 🧵

Was just snooping on this timeline today. Craft at Guardian filed #FOIA in November 2025, denied expedited processing. Sued in March (@rcfp) and got productions in May and July. Story lands in Sept. It's a LONG game.

You simply have to hand it to ESPN for going all in on Pat McAfee and letting former employee Pablo Torre dogwalk the entire network on the biggest NBA story in years

Pablo's investigation accomplished several things, but I would argue that its biggest accomplishment was holding a mirror in front of the present state of sports journalism and exposing its sycophantic nature.

Quite the story — July 30 (Reuters) - A U.S. government map of Africa mislabeled every country during a State Department presentation at ‌a global conference taking place in Brazil this week, causing a stir among attendees who took screenshots and posted them online.

The data included in this release is regularly released as part of the city’s property tax assessment roll. It’s a huge data file that anyone can search if they have the bandwidth to download it and look. It’s not new.
This was in poor form as publishing names/addresses singles out people who have done nothing wrong, at a moment when the far extremes of the political spectrum already treat success itself as something to be punished. Most of the people on that list aren’t billionaires by any stretch - they’re people that believed in NYC, worked hard and bought a second home. All this does is make people feel less safe in their own city, and less welcome in it. nypost.com/2026/07/27/us-new…

New: ProPublica is sharing eight handwritten letters from children who have been held at the detention center that 5-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos was recently released from. We'll let their words speak for themselves. propub.li/4a4V4nR

Brutal new Quinnipiac poll for the Trump admin. Americans say Pretti's killing was "not justified" by 40 points, 62-22. (That's double the margin on Good's killing.) Also: -63% disapprove of ICE (up from 57%) -60% want ICE out of Minneapolis -58% want Noem removed from office
