📣 Calix and Hydro Partner to develop Zero Emissions ALumina (#ZEAL) Calix is delighted to be partnering with Hydro, a leading global aluminium and renewable energy company, to develop electric calcination for near-zero emissions smelter-grade #alumina. Together, Calix and Hydro aim to develop designs to apply the ZEAL technology in integrated and scalable electric alumina calcination systems. A materials testing program at the Calix Technology Centre using feedstock from Hydro's Alunorte refinery, a pre-FEED study and a collaborative technology development program is designed to develop and demonstrate the viability, efficiency and scalability of the ZEAL technology for commercial alumina calcination. 📣 Calix signs MOU and testing agreement with global aluminium major Calix has signed a MOU and a services agreement for pilot-scale material testing and a pre-FEED study with a leading global aluminium company to jointly develop Calix’s Zero Emissions ALumina (#ZEAL) technology. ✅ ZEAL aims to use electric calcination to eliminate fossil fuel use in alumina refining, while potentially improving product quality and reducing emissions and costs. ✅ Material testing at the Calix Technology Centre in Bacchus Marsh, Victoria, aims to demonstrate the feasibility of Calix’s ZEAL technology to produce smelter grade alumina from feedstock used at a refinery of the Alumina Company (which remains commercial-in-confidence). ✅ A pre-FEED study aims to further develop the process and plant basis of design for the ZEAL technology’s potential application in a commercial alumina refinery. With aluminium accounting for ~2% of global CO₂ emissions, ZEAL has the potential to play a major role in supporting the sector’s low-carbon transition. Reducing the cost of green iron with energy flexibility Recent analysis by The Superpower Institute and Bivios has highlighted the significant potential cost advantages of Calix’s flexible core platform technology. The Superpower Institute featured Calix’s #ZESTY as the flexible #greeniron production technology in its landmark report, ‘A Green Iron Plan for Australia’. The modelling found that ZESTY could produce green iron at a lower cost than inflexible technologies that must produce continuously. ZESTY’s lower cost of production was largely thanks to its potential to ramp production up and down to match the availability of lower cost green energy and hydrogen. By trading energy back to electricity grids when supply was short, ZESTY could also unlock mutual benefits for producers and grids, helping to improve grid stability and generate additional revenues for green iron projects.
