SML-173: Squaring Off a Position
Squaring off means closing an open trade by doing the opposite trade. After that, you hold no position in that share.
How it works:
If you bought first (long): You square off by selling.
If you sold first (short): You square off by buying back (SML-171).
Example (illustration only):
You buy 100 shares at โน200 and later sell them at โน205. Gross profit: โน500.
You sell 100 shares at โน205 and later buy them back at โน200. Gross profit: โน500.
Brokerage, STT and other charges are extra (SML-168, SML-169).
Open and closed positions:
Open position: The trade is not closed yet. Profit or loss is unrealised and changes with the price.
Squared off: The trade is closed. Profit or loss is final (realised).
Square-off in intraday trading:
Intraday positions must be closed on the same day (SML-156).
If you do not close them, your broker usually squares them off automatically near market close.
The broker can close at any price available at that time, and may charge a fee for it.
Square-off in F&O:
Futures and options positions can be closed before expiry.
Check your broker's expiry rules. Some positions may settle by physical delivery, which needs money or shares in your account.
Partial square-off:
You can close only a part. For example, if you hold 100 shares, you can sell 40 and keep 60 open.
Caution:
Do not hold an intraday loss hoping it will recover. The broker's auto square-off may happen at a worse price.
Use a limit order if the price matters to you, and a market order if exiting fast matters more (SML-157, SML-158).
If a stock hits a circuit or has low liquidity, you may not be able to square off (SML-165, SML-104).
Square-off means two trades, so charges apply on both.
Intraday profit or loss is generally treated as speculative business income for tax.
Key takeaway:
Squaring off means closing a trade with an opposite order. Plan your exit before you enter, so the market does not choose it for you.

A young man was always the first to laugh at his father's old stories.
โDad, you've told me this one a hundred times!โ
His father would smile and start again.
Years later, the young man returned home and found his father's old voice recordings on a phone.
He played one.
Then another.
Then another.
He sat there for hours, listening to stories he once thought were boring.
For the first time, he wished his father would repeat just one more.
Growing up sometimes means discovering the value of things we were once too young to understand.
Don't wait until a voice becomes a memory before you learn to appreciate it.

๐ณ WAITโฆ WHAT ARE THESE FINGERS?! ๐คฏ๐ Look closely before you judge! Would you touch them, or run away? ๐๐
I watched a young boy in my area yesterday practising free-kicks with a deflated ball against a wall.
He kept adjusting his run-up, changing the angle of his foot, and celebrating even the ones that hit the wall.
No coach, no cones, no perfect pitch just pure repetition.
Thatโs the same principle behind many of the technical players we admire: thousands of quiet reps before the big stage.
Skill is rarely a miracle; itโs usually stubborn practice dressed in a jersey.

๐ฌ MOM, I GOT THE JOBโฆ ๐๐ฅน
For six months, a young man attended job interviews without success.
Every evening, his mother asked the same question:
โAny good news today, my son?โ
And every evening, he lied.
โYes, Mom. Something good is coming.โ
The truth was that he was exhausted, broke, and beginning to lose hope.
His mother secretly sold her only gold necklace to pay his transport to one final interview.
When he discovered what sheโd done, he cried.
โMom, why would you sacrifice the last thing Dad left you?โ
She held his face and whispered, โBecause you are worth more than gold.โ
Three days later, his phone rang.
He got the job.
He ran home, lifted his mother in his arms, and shouted, โMOM, I GOT IT! WE MADE IT!โ
She cried harder than he did.
That night, he bought her favorite meal and promised to give her the life she deserved.
But life had a cruel surprise.
His mother passed away just two weeks later, before his first salary arrived.
On payday, he bought her favorite flowers and took them to her grave.
He knelt down, placed his first paycheck on the ground, and whispered:
โMom, you can stop worrying now. Your son is going to be okay.โ
Then he broke down.
Because the one person he had worked so hard to make proud was no longer there to see it.
Sometimes, the saddest part of achieving your dreams is realizing that the person who sacrificed everything for you isnโt there to celebrate with you. ๐๐ญ

๐ THE ARROGANT DRIVER WHO LOST EVERYTHING
Michael was a wealthy driver who believed the road belonged to him. He insulted other drivers, ignored traffic rules, and treated pedestrians with disrespect.
One rainy afternoon, he rudely honked at an elderly man helping his granddaughter cross the road. Instead of apologizing, Michael drove away proudly.
Minutes later, he met a man who was supposed to offer him a major business deal. Unfortunately, the man had witnessed his behavior.
โI judge people by how they treat others, not by the cars they drive,โ the man said before walking away.
Michael lost the deal and finally understood that wealth could not buy good character.
From that day, he learned to drive with patience and treat everyone with respect.
๐ก MORAL LESSON: Your car may show your wealth, but your behavior reveals your character. Never let pride destroy opportunities that humility could bring.
๐ค QUESTION: Have you ever met a driver who thinks the road belongs to them?
