I realised I never really did a post about who I am, or for the new followers here that don't know me:
I'm Calum, 29, from the UK.
Self-employed since 17 as a graphic and web designer. No inherited money, no trust fund, just years of client work turned into savings and then investments.
Why I invest:
- Not to look wealthy, to actually become wealthy
- Financial freedom is the real goal, not flexing a number
- Time and optionality matter more to me than stuff
My journey so far:
- Bought Bitcoin at 18, way before I understood anything about markets
- Started picking individual stocks properly at 22 (felt late)
- Long-only, no leverage, no options, no shorting
- Aim to max my UK Stocks and Shares ISA every year
- Made plenty of mistakes along the way ($CRSR still haunts me, sold $MU way too early)
- Building Chartloom as part of my journey
Current portfolio:
- 13 individual stocks, no ETFs
- Led by $AMD and $TSLA as my two highest conviction positions
- Rounded out by names like $AMZN, $META, $DUOL, $HIMS, $NFLX
- Sitting around 10%~ cash, currently deploying aggressively this year.
Where I'm headed:
- Moving to South East Asia next year with GF
- Lower cost of living / maybe more to invest eventually.
- Building wealth doesn't have to mean staying in an expensive country you didn't choose
And why Chartloom exists:
I got tired of paying for or juggling multiple different tools just to research a stock properly. So I started building the platform I wished existed when I was 22 with no clue what I was doing.
Currently has free research tools for anyone, and a paid tier priced at a fraction of what the big incumbents charge for the same depth.
Still early, still building in public, still figuring a lot of it out as I go.
That's me. What do you want to know?
"we're going to run thousands of A/B tests to try to monetize better"
$DUOL CEO on the Q3 call
my takeaway: killing max makes that easier
one bigger paid group in super instead of two, max being single digit % anyway
more users → more tests → better app → people stay → more users
and I think that loop is speeding up. I believe we will see this much more in the revenue number in H2 27.
Bullish
think you missed $DUOL after a 35% day?
it's still ~6x EV/sales
for a business with users growing 29%, ~73% gross margins and a raised guide, that still looks cheap to me
$DUOL on killing its top tier, Max:
"Since unlimited Video Call will be part of Super, we've decided to sunset Duolingo Max, our highest subscription tier."
AI video call used to be too pricey to give away, so it sat behind max plan
then the cost per call collapsed ($0.30 > $0.01)
back in August they said a decision on max was coming. So not too surprised here.
they're not pocketing the AI savings, they're giving more people the feature > increasing learning quality.
and so far it's working: subscription bookings +16% vs subs +14% in Q3, the reverse of Q2.
Bearish take: Without a top tier, the most engaged learners have nothing pricier to upgrade to, so revenue growth has to come from more users rather than higher prices.
Bullish: Cheaper AI lets Duolingo put its best feature into the main plan. Will likely increase value of Super + retention + learning quality (spoken words).
$DUOL CEO Luis von ahn:
"We expect this momentum to continue, with year-over-year DAU growth in Q4 similar to Q3"
Q3 was +29% 👀
$DUOL vs what wall street expected:
Daily users: 64.9M vs ~63.5M ✅
Bookings: $316.1M vs ~$309M ✅
Revenue: $309.0M vs ~$305M ✅
Paid subs: 13.1M, in line
misses: ads and in-app purchases
Q4 revenue guide $322M vs ~$315M expected
$DUOL is paying a company-wide bonus if daily users grow 25%+ in Q4
they've already set aside $11.4M for it in Q3
Q3 came in at 29%
love it when the whole team is chasing the one number that matters. Incentives are aligned with shareholders here imo
$DUOL reports on tuesday
the one number i'm watching: daily users
last quarter: 58.7M, up 23%
will post my takeaways after
what people say about $DUOL:
"chatgpt killed it"
what $DUOL reported last quarter:
- 58.7M daily users (+23%)
- 12.7M paying subscribers (+17%)
- 84% user retention, an all-time high
- $78.6M free cash flow
if ai is killing the owl, it's taking its time ðŸ˜
q3 earnings are out tuesday 3 nov after the close. what are you expecting?
Plan 2 student loan
Extra £100 a month
ONE choice:
- Overpay the loan
- Put it in a Stocks and Shares ISA
Overpaying doesn't lower your 9% payments
And whatever's left is wiped after 30 years
Which would you pick?
