Stolen Guns, Missing Context. A duffel bag full of stolen 'illegal' guns makes for a good headline. But the story behind these particular firearms is considerably more complicated than the label suggests. Those Schmeissers and that AK-type rifle might look scary, and “cache of guns” certainly makes for a sexy headline. But these aren’t the “weapons of war” the imagery might suggest. The Schmeissers are German Sport Gun replicas, while the AK-type rifle is a Type 81, manufactured for the Canadian market. They represent firearms that were once legal to own in Canada but have since been recently prohibited. And now comes the question: how much work and trouble will the lawful owner face trying to recover his own property?
