Despite being a midfielder by trade, I believe Xavi Espart interpreted the inverted left full-back positional demands better than Cancelo. Reads the game faster, adjusts his position (wide vs central, deep vs btwn the lines) & times his pressing actions more quickly & precisely.

I say unfortunately because it involves using your arms & thus puts you at risk of injuring an opponent and/or getting a yellow. It's a balance : play the aerial duel fairly while also protecting yourself from potential injury. You'll never see a 30+ player making this mistake.

You see how Cubarsรญ got hit in the face in that aerial challenge? Happens to him many times in aerial duels. As it happened to Gavi last time. Unfortunately you have to somehow protect yourself in those instances to avoid getting injured. Smthg our young players have to learn.

I believe Gavi deserved more playing time by now, as a rotation player to rest Rodri or Pedri, especially since Bernal hasn't proven to add more value than him to our midfield.

Replying to @SaintKeeks1
I struggle to make sense of a Bouaddi Anderson Enzo midfield 3. Would be very solid defensively a'd to keep the ball, but little creativity going forward or goals (apart from Enzo a bit but it's not like he's Fermin level of box crashing).

Every time I've watched Dro play for PSG, he looked completely overwhelmed by the physical intensity of Ligue 1.

Whatโ€™s a polite way to tell someone, โ€œIโ€™m not discussing this with you because your entire understanding of the subject is built on so many interconnected misconceptions that correcting them would require uninstalling your current worldview and starting the tutorial from birthโ€?

The lack of understanding of Chinese culture and corporate logic in the Mbappรฉ affair is shocking. *Whether he's right or wrong*, did Western commentators honestly expect Chinese brands to just sit back and absorb the damage to their revenue, inventory, and national reputation?

The most useless thing Barรงa does when pressing high is probably that winger to center back press *without closing the passing lane towards the full-back*. It happened so frequently lately that I wonder if it's premeditated. Opponents move the ball side to side too easily...

One trick when defending one-twos is to run across the runner's trajectory (the initial passer) & subtly nudge him. It doesn't ensure being first to the ball, but it slightly breaks his balance & momentum. It also helps compensate a lack of pace.(Cubarsรญ does it often)

Remember those one-twos Bastoni used to play from deep to progress play at Inter? Here's how PSG systematically dealt with them.

During build-up from goal kicks, PSG & RM's CBs pressed Rafa & Fermรญn high, leaving Barรงa's wingers in 1v1s. Too often Barรงa forced long balls directly to Gordon's feet. Given his pace, maybe targeting the open central space (btwn their full-backs) would have been smarter.

The kind of play I mentioned, but perfectly executed, resulting in a goal by Mitoma (De Zerbi's Brighton).

Obviously I don't mean the goal is on him, but it still amazes me how Cancelo never scans his surroundings in/around the box to keep track of the opponent's positions. Always looking at the ball. His defensive awareness is so limited.

Regardless of form, I always advocated for Baldรฉ to have more playing time. We lacked depth in DF, so it was highly probable we'd need him at some point. We paid the price in #ElClasico & PSG games: he clearly lacked match rhythm & positional understanding w/ his teammates.

I believe this will be key in #ElClรกsico : Real Madrid's capacity to quickly switch play from side to side.
I contributed to a guest roundtable answering 5 key questions ahead of the #Clรกsico for @RealDealPodz. โ€‹My take on Barรงa's structural vulnerabilities, Real Madrid's capacity to exploit them in transitions, and the factors that could decide the match.๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿพ

Watch the sequence before Mbappรฉ's goal. Quick switch to the left side, Cucurella & Diomandรฉ vs Cancelo in 2v1, Yamal higher. nitter.gq/Anthony81684960/statusโ€ฆ

That's *THE* sequence that causes most problems to Barรงa. It's a regular occurrence. And we're not equipped to defend it. I predicted Rodri would be exposed.
A type of sequence where I thought Rodri could be exposed at Barรงa. Since Yamal rarely tracks deep & the right back often finds himself in 1v2, usually one of the CMs has to track the underlapping run or (most often, but risky) Cubarsรญ sprints wide to block the cross.

A game to forget. The way we let them grow into the match & gain confidence, our inability to deal w/ their man-marking in midfield, even the substitutions, I didn't like any of it. We couldn't gather attacking momentum & basically played at their rhythm. A fair loss. #ElClasico

I keep reading that the current meta in football prioritizes rotations, high pressing & man-marking, and short combinations into space (one-twos, 3rd man) to bypass it. In a way, modern tactics have cycled right back to Cruyff's foundational ideas.
