Fantastic work by @laraewilson22 👏🏽.
This marks the first publication from her match-funded PhD in collaboration with @Scotlandteam & @Carnegie_Sport focusing on international women’s rugby 🏉.
Thanks for sharing @tecoughlin 🙌🏽.
Energy expenditure of international female rugby players 🔥🏉
This new study assessed energy expenditure of 15 rugby players during 14-days of an international multi-game tournament 🏴
(2 consecutive one-match microcycles )
Energy expenditure was assessed via indirect calorimetry + doubly labelled water💧
🫀Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR)
1577 ± 222 kcal/day
🔥Total Energy Expenditure (TEE)
3229 ± 545 kcal/day
Interestingly there were no differences in TEE between the two training weeks despite substantial differences in training load 📊
Plus, after correcting for body composition there were no differences in TEE or RMR between backs and forwards ⚖️
An injured participant’s TEE reduced by 406 kcal/day 🚨
Also, three players with illness had similar TEE to pre-illness levels (+117 kcal/day) 🤧
