Good to see that NeurIPS is placing a stronger focus on ethics in AI.

Sweet because: These are signs that NeurIPS is maturing. @_KarenHao wrote an article about the community growing up: technologyreview.com/s/61493… We’re getting better at diversity/inclusion and taking responsibility for our actions, though there’s still room to grow.
Had a fun time delivering this @Ri_Science masterclass on maths and computing using Smarties!

Enjoyed the "Postdocs to Innovators" event in Cambridge last week, organised by @p2i_network. A good way to learn about business models and the different types of funding available for commercialising research.

@CarolWebsterCS is interested in using convolutional neural networks to classify images, particularly from medical devices. At the moment she is using them to determine whether microscope images are in/out of focus.

Over the last few weeks I've been reading The Batch, a new newsletter from @deeplearningai_. Lots of interesting articles, including one this week on the relative popularity of PyTorch and TensorFlow in research/industry.
In this week's Batch, we've got TensorFlow vs. PyTorch, autonomous drone races, and NLP for rare languages. Read this week's issue: hubs.ly/H0lh-pN0

Just been to a great talk for #AdaLovelaceDay19 by Sharon Moore, IBM's CTO for Public Sector UK. She offered the following words of wisdom: "Courage, not confidence!" We may not always feel confident, but if we have the courage to try something new we will make progress.

Better understanding diversity and inclusion in AI is just one aspect of ensuring we're building a technology that works for everyone, but it's a crucial part.
Proud to support a @PartnershipAI fellowship to further research and promote diversity and inclusion in the field.
The #AI field continues to suffer from a severe lack of ethnic, gender, & cultural diversity. To explore these pervasive challenges, @DeepMindAI today gifted £250K to the Partnership on AI to support the establishment of a fellowship focused on this task: partnershiponai.org/why-were…
