One of the most famous shots of Marilyn Monroe taken by Douglas Kirkland in 1961 Kirkland was a 24-year-old photographer with a crush on Marilyn, on his first major assignment for Look magazine. To emerge, taking original and innovative shots of the most photographed star ever, Kirkland chose the intimate confines of an unmade bed resulting in some of the most spontaneous and captivating photographs ever taken of Marilyn. “I wanted a clearer, more honest representation of her who was perhaps used to showing off.” To take the shots, however, Marilyn made some requests: the sheets had to be silk, a bottle of Dom Perignon had to be within reach and Frank Sinatra's music had to resonate in the room. Arriving 3 hours late on set, Marilyn had herself photographed by a nervous Kirkland hanging from a railing above her, with only the help of a simple projector to create the soft shadows that frame the actress's body. Kirkland's first serious work concluded with a series of dreamy images that have become legend. Many years later Kirkland said that Marilyn asked him to sleep with her once Kirkland's team left them alone. The photographer said he refused, struggling not to give in to temptation. Maybe.
