Hilaire Belloc explains why you need to read old books: “There is no habit more dangerous to a man's active intellectual life than that of reading only modern books. The contemporary writer is usually not yet judged by time. He writes under the pressure of fashion and opinion. But the old books have survived. They have been tested. They come to us stamped with the approval of generations. To read them is to breathe a larger air.” Which old book are you immersed in right now?

Catholics, reminder: You can free a soul from purgatory every day this week. From Nov 1–8, the Church grants a plenary indulgence, applicable to the souls in purgatory, each day you: 1. Visit a cemetery and pray for the dead (even silently) 2. Go to confession (within about 20 days before or after) 3. Receive Holy Communion 4. Pray for the Pope's intentions (an Our Father and Hail Mary is enough) 5. Be detached from all sin, even venial Today only (All Souls Day): you can also gain one by visiting a church and praying the Our Father and the Creed. One confession covers the whole week. Communion and the prayer for the Pope are needed for each day's indulgence. And if you're not fully detached from sin, you still gain a partial indulgence. So go anyway. Repost this to spread the word. The souls in purgatory need our help.

Pathetic, but hardly surprising. Of course, this merely proves @BishopBarron's point in his blunt but entirely accurate post a couple of days ago. John Paul II, 35 years ago, in Crossing the Threshold of Faith, politely but clearly pointed out the stark differences between Catholicism and Islam. And the future Benedict XVI, in "Dominus Iesus," clearly denounced this sort of relativism when it comes to evangelization. First, JPII: "Whoever knows the Old and New Testaments, and then reads the Koran, clearly sees the process by which it completely reduces Divine Revelation. It is impossible not to note the movement away from what God said about Himself, first in the Old Testament through the Prophets, and then finally in the New Testament through His Son. In Islam all the richness of God's self-revelation, which constitutes the heritage of the Old and New Testaments, has definitely been set aside. Some of the most beautiful names in the human language are given to the God of the Koran, but He is ultimately a God outside of the world, a God who is only Majesty, never Emmanuel, God-with-us. Islam is not a religion of redemption. There is no room for the Cross and the Resurrection. Jesus is mentioned, but only as a prophet who prepares for the last prophet, Muhammad. There is also mention of Mary, His Virgin Mother, but the tragedy of redemption is completely absent. For this reason not only the theology but also the anthropology of Islam is very distant from Christianity." And Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, then Prefect of the Congregation of the Doctrine of Faith: "'Indeed, God -desires all men to be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth' (1 Tim 2:4); that is, God wills the salvation of everyone through the knowledge of the truth. Salvation is found in the truth. Those who obey the promptings of the Spirit of truth are already on the way of salvation. But the Church, to whom this truth has been entrusted, must go out to meet their desire, so as to bring them the truth. Because she believes in God's universal plan of salvation, the Church must be missionary”‌. Inter-religious dialogue, therefore, as part of her evangelizing mission, is just one of the actions of the Church in her mission ad gentes. Equality, which is a presupposition of inter-religious dialogue, refers to the equal personal dignity of the parties in dialogue, not to doctrinal content, nor even less to the position of Jesus Christ - who is God himself made man - in relation to the founders of the other religions. Indeed, the Church, guided by charity and respect for freedom, must be primarily committed to proclaiming to all people the truth definitively revealed by the Lord, and to announcing the necessity of conversion to Jesus Christ and of adherence to the Church through Baptism and the other sacraments, in order to participate fully in communion with God, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Thus, the certainty of the universal salvific will of God does not diminish, but rather increases the duty and urgency of the proclamation of salvation and of conversion to the Lord Jesus Christ." (DI, 22)
Terrific response by Cardinal Jean-Paul Vesco to @BishopBarron disgraceful attack on his integrity. Vesco speaks from the Church, Barron for himself.

Kneeling to receive Holy Communion is not liturgical extremism. This was settled long ago. 👇
This business about kneeling for Holy Communion was settled long ago. In fact, the USCCB was subtly corrected on the matter in the publication of the 2010 American translation of the 2000 edition of the Missale Romanum. Here's what happened... In 2000, the third edition of the Missale Romanum was promulgated by St. John Paul II, which included a revised General Instruction of the Roman Missal (i.e., the GIRM). Every episcopal conference could then make adaptations proper to their own bishops' dioceses as long as the Holy See approved those modifications. In 2002, therefore, this revised General Instruction of the Roman Missal was issued for the United States with the approved adaptations for the United States. Paragraph 160 of that 2002 US GIRM said: "The norm for reception of Holy Communion in the dioceses of the United States is standing. Communicants should not be denied Holy Communion because they kneel. Rather, such instances should be addressed pastorally, by providing the faithful with proper catechesis on the reasons for this norm." Communicants couldn't be denied Holy Communion for kneeling, but they should be "addressed pastorally." Keep in mind, we were still using the 1972 translation of Mass found in what was called then the Sacramentary. In 2004, the then-Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments at the Holy See issued an all-encompassing document addressing deficiencies and abuses regarding the Most Holy Sacrament called Redemptionis Sacramentum. In paragraph 90 of that document, the Holy See affirmed: "'The faithful should receive Communion kneeling or standing, as the Conference of Bishops will have determined', with its acts having received the recognitio of the Apostolic See. 'However, if they receive Communion standing, it is recommended that they give due reverence before the reception of the Sacrament, as set forth in the same norms.'" Note the Holy See's insistence here on the norm that any determination by an episcopal conference on these matters must have the approval (the recognitio) of Holy See. The following paragraph (91) says this: "In distributing Holy Communion it is to be remembered that 'sacred ministers may not deny the sacraments to those who seek them in a reasonable manner, are rightly disposed, and are not prohibited by law from receiving them'. Hence any baptized Catholic who is not prevented by law must be admitted to Holy Communion. Therefore, it is not licit to deny Holy Communion to any of Christ’s faithful solely on the grounds, for example, that the person wishes to receive the Eucharist kneeling or standing." Fast forward to 2010 after the US Bishops approved an English translation for the 2000 Missale Romanum, it's sent to Rome to be approved, but NOT WITHOUT a change in the US GIRM at paragraph 160--a change that wasn't reported at the time as being requested by the USCCB. In other words, it's a change that the Holy See simply made on its own authority. Unlike the 2002 US GIRM at 160, the 2010 and CURRENT US GIRM at 160 doesn't mention any pastoral issue needing to be addressed about the faithful kneeling to receive Holy Communion. Presumably, this is because the Holy See doesn't think it is a pastoral issue. The 2010 US GIRM, approved by the Holy See and changed from the 2002 version by the authority and initiative of the Holy See, now says: "It is not permitted for the faithful to take the consecrated Bread or the sacred chalice by themselves and, still less, to hand them on from one to another among themselves. The norm established for the Dioceses of the United States of America is that Holy Communion is to be received standing, unless an individual member of the faithful wishes to receive Communion while kneeling" (and cites Redemptionis Sacramentum, paragraph 91). Thus, in 2010, the Holy See changed the US GIRM specifically to remove any sense of kneeling being a pastoral issue. Yes, standing is the norm in the United States, UNLESS a member of the faithful wishes to receive Holy Communion while kneeling. Sources in the replies:

Minutes before this incident, Fr. Molinari preached the following in his homily: “All of us are going to die. Sometimes the time we have spent on things has far less meaning than the time we spend with God, the quality time we give to God, to our brothers and sisters, to our husbands, wives, children and families. That is the time best spent.” Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Dear friends, during some recent medical examinations, the doctors found a small, localized nodule in my lung. It was detected at a very early stage and is well-localized. The doctors believe that it is best to intervene, so, following their advice, I have decided to undergo surgery to remove it. The operation is already scheduled to take place in the coming days. I thank you for your spiritual closeness and entrust myself to your prayers.

This is a qualified victory, but a real one. If assisted suicide had been expanded to the mentally ill, thousands of people struggling with depression, anxiety, and scores of other conditions would have qualified for a lethal injection--and taken it. As someone who knows and loves many people who struggle with mental illness and would have qualified, I am very grateful. The fight to protect Canada's vulnerable continues.
Sean Fraser @SeanFraserMP has announced that Canada will scrap the expansion of MAiD for mental illness BUT will legalise “advance directives” for MAiD.

This is an old story. A post-1960s story. France is now running the American white guilt formula. We know how this grift works. White guilt is black power. The "oppressed" black and minority leaders sell victimhood for power. The "oppressor" whites buy their innocence with deference, programs and lower expectations. Both sides get what they want, except the children, who are mere pawns. So this mayor stands with students blockading their own school and tells the cameras that violence can be legitimate, just as Black Lives Matter activists called the 2020 looting reparations. He is selling their grievance, expecting France to buy it out of the terror of being called colonial and racist. No matter what France does, it loses. Every attempt to restore order becomes a new grievance for the "oppressed," and they will never give it up, because it is the only power they have. The white guilt elites only care about their innocence. After all, they see their own nation as the oppressor. So the decline continues. That is why white guilt is the most destructive force in America and the West.

I predict the Liberals will scrap the expansion of MAID for mental illness as a sole condition while moving to legalize death for dementia by expanding MAID by advance request nationwide. Persons with dementia are becoming the newest target of Canada's MAID regime.

Why men -- especially conservative men -- won't go to therapy: The weird thing about the American Psychological Association (APA) is that every objective observer has known that it's been ideologically captured by the Left since the 1970s. That's the main reason why the Association for Psychological Science split off back in 1988, to form a more-scientific, less-politicized version of APA. Yet, here we are, 40 years later -- with APA still the main accrediting body that gives its seal of approval to PhD programs that train the vast majority of licensed clinical psychologists in America. APA sets the agenda. It determines what gets covered in graduate courses. It runs the most influential journals and conferences. It sets the whole political and ideological tone for psychological research. For decades, it has pushed political correctness, 'affirmative action', wokeness, DEI, and Leftist political causes. APA also ignores, censors, and/or demonizes the psychological research areas that are politically incorrect, but that replicate well (e.g. intelligence research, behavior genetics, evolutionary psychology, sex differences). There are alternatives. For example, the Psychological Clinical Science Accreditation System (PCSAS) focuses more on the real science -- evidence-based treatments and interventions -- rather than on the Leftist activism of APA. But, for the moment, the APA's ideological agenda still dominates American clinical psychology. This partly explains the feedback loop between clinical psychology becoming so feminized (with women getting about 80% of clinical psychology PhDs), and clinical psychology becoming so radical-Leftist in its politics. And it explains why it's pretty difficult to find licensed clinical psychologists who are actually sympathetic to men, conservatives, and/or Christians. This is one big reason why men won't go to therapy -- they don't want to deal with a (probably female, probably liberal) therapist who has been indoctrinated into wokeness for 5-6 years throughout her graduate training.

Disastrous policies have disastrous consequences. A Canadian company, Psiphon, built software that helps people in authoritarian countries get around censorship. Now it says it may have to leave Canada 🇨🇦 The reason: Bill C-22 would require telecoms and internet providers to build surveillance and monitoring capabilities into their systems for police and CSIS. When privacy tools say they can't operate safely here, that's worth paying attention to. Tech exodus begins, as predicted.

There are two principal ways for a country to grow its population: through natural population growth or through immigration. Canada’s fertility rate has fallen to 1.26, far below the replacement level of approximately 2.1. Before talking about increasing Canada’s population, we should be asking some fundamental questions: 1. Why are Canadians having fewer children? 2. Why has life become so unaffordable? 3. And how do we address the growing pressures on our health care, housing, education and other essential infrastructure? Responsible and balanced immigration has always played an important role in Canada. But immigration should not become a substitute for addressing the affordability pressures that are making it increasingly difficult for Canadians to start and raise a family.

In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgent to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity.
