Rewatching The Bird With The Crystal Plumage for the first time in like 15 years Easy to take Dario Argento for granted, but holy shit. Visionary direction, especially in its cultural context. There was *nothing* else like this at the time. The use of sound and silence alone

The script is...something we accept. You would not enjoy merely listening to this movie. By now, we appreciate these stilted, delirious giallo scripts, because we rationalize it as something endemic to this genre. The phoniness itself (down to the odd diction) is part of a style

The visuals are beautiful, but it's not quite visual storytelling. It's more like the movie *is* a movie, you're admiring the movie as an object, you're admiring how a movie could be so stylish and exciting. We're being *cool*. Caring about the characters would seem babyish

Takashi Miike talking about VISITOR Q (2001). There’s a subsection of film fandom that really really needs to try and internalize this mode of creation/understanding.

Happy anniversary to The Times They Are a-Changin', the truly cursed Bob Dylan Broadway musical that opened on this date in 2006 (and closed a couple weeks later). For "Like a Rolling Stone," they had the whole cast—wait for it—roll around on stones.

I'll watch Dune Messiah, and I might even enjoy it, but it also feels like a Movie That Doesn't Exist

It's not that there's never situations where the centrists are wrong or that ideologues never have a point, but you should be very skeptical of people who commit the fallacy of the excluded middle. They want to exclude the middle to force you to make an ideological choice.

Me whenever anybody makes any sort of sound around me at all or approaches me in any way, no matter how ginger their footsteps or sweet their vocal tone, as they plead with me to please calm down for even a second

This type of thinking produces a very interesting type of person - one who thinks that because they hold Good opinions, it's the same as being a Good person and therefore they don't really have to actually _do_ anything Good. I've met several over my lifetime

dinosaurs went extinct and it became really hard for megafauna to exist and to maintain and engineer landscapes/open up the canopy so rats were like whatever it can’t be that hard

My takeaway from Dune generally is that Herbert shows the world as a great big ecosystem - Paul is not a "Great Man" in the sense that he's super swell and neat, but he is an aberration within the universe's ecology, and it's interesting to see his downstream effects
Whenever someone says “Herbert wrote Messiah cause Paul bad” just ask them why he went on to write Children of Dune and God Emperor which show Paul was right.

I enjoyed this one as a kid watching it on Channel 11, but it deserves an Actually Good adaptation. Hell, combine it with The Mangler.
Stephen King didn't like the movie Graveyard Shift, adapted from his short story and released on this day in 1990, calling it "a quick exploitation picture", but it has its fans. If you're looking to fill 90 minutes with a splash of horror silliness, you could do worse.

You peeps are the people I expect to be well-researched and granular to contribute cases of this to me: directors who use a film to explore ideas or concepts from a film they were not allowed to make
