The Ithookwe Airstrip is being rehabilitated by KAA and KCAA, including runway resurfacing, drainage, fencing, and aviation safety upgrades. Once complete, it will support VIP and military aircraft for Mashujaa Day and boost Kitui’s long-term connectivity, trade, tourism, and emergency response.

As part of the Mashujaa Day preparations, key road upgrades are underway in Kitui County, including the improvement of the Mulutu–Ithiani Market–Kiliko Road and the 7.2 km Ithiani–Mbusyani–Ithookwe Stadium Road. These projects will provide a direct link to the B62 highway, boosting trade, improving market access, and driving long-term economic growth in the region.

The KSh 700 million Ithookwe Stadium is 80% complete and set for official handover on 6th October 2025. The 10,000-seater multipurpose facility will give Kitui County its first ever modern venue for sports, cultural activities, and national celebrations.
