We do not need to over-complicate what should be a simple award: Harry Kane has been, by some distance, the best footballer anywhere in the world over the last year.
To watch Kane right now, in the year he turned 33, is to feel in the presence of mastery. He continues to add layers to his game, marrying his unique football brain with technical ingenuity. He is not just the world’s best No 9 but probably the world’s best No 10 too.
No one else in the running can make a claim like that.
