China Media Group Sports and Youth Center spokesperson: We do not accept Real Madrid’s statement
In response to reports in the Spanish media concerning a statement by the Real Madrid club of La Liga regarding Kylian Mbappé’s negative remarks about China, the Spokesperson for the Sports and Youth Center of China Media Group responds as follows:
We have noted Real Madrid’s public statement. Yesterday and today, the President of La Liga and other relevant parties have on multiple occasions sent letters to China Media Group tendering public apologies. We hold that Mbappé’s outrageous remarks have caused harm to the Chinese people, crossed a red line, and exceeded the bounds of freedom of expression. As Mbappé is a player of Real Madrid, the club cannot evade its responsibility.
Accordingly, we do not accept Real Madrid’s explanation insisting that Mbappé “never intended to offend” and asserting that players are entitled to express personal views; nor do we accept such an attitude on the part of Real Madrid. As for Real Madrid’s claim that “the club’s cooperative relationship with Chinese sponsors remains unchanged,” we shall not verify its authenticity. We reiterate, however, that words and deeds that hurt the feelings of the Chinese people will inevitably encounter concerted resistance from all sectors of Chinese society. We hope that Real Madrid will refrain from indulging in wishful thinking.
Until Real Madrid tenders an adequate apology, no further discussions will be entertained.
