A Sweet Early Start: Marathwada mills are crushing, just in time. Drought and record October heat had cane drying fast. A later start would have sent it to fodder and cut sugar output further. 55 mills are already running across Maharashtra.
Early crushing was the perfect call by the sugar mills and sugarcane farmers.

Sugar prices firm up ahead of Diwali as demand outlook strengthens
With India about a fortnight away from Diwali, the country’s biggest sugar demand window, the domestic market is already reflecting concerns over supply.
Ex-mill sugar prices in Maharashtra have risen from around ₹4,650 per quintal to ₹5,050–5,100 this week, while Uttar Pradesh is quoting ₹5,200–5,300 per quintal.
The market outlook suggests this may be more than a temporary festive spike, with fundamentals pointing towards firm sugar prices over the coming weeks.

Integrated sugar mills may offset ethanol revenue losses with higher sugar sales under the ESY 2026-27 policy shift. 📊
India Ratings and Research (Ind-Ra) estimates that zero sugar diversion could release around 3 million tonnes of additional sugar, potentially generating ₹13,500–₹15,000 crore in revenue at prevailing prices.
This could largely offset the ₹10,000+ crore ethanol revenue loss expected for integrated mills, while maize-based ethanol producers may face margin pressure. 🌾

Shift from B-heavy molasses to maize-based ethanol could raise OMC procurement costs by ₹813 crore. 🌽
For every 100 crore litres of ethanol shifted to maize, procurement costs could rise from ₹60.73/litre to ₹68.86/litre — an increase of 13.4%.
The higher cost could put pressure on the marketing margins of public sector oil companies, with the overall impact depending on the feedstock mix used for ethanol procurement.

Maharashtra’s sugar industry could face an estimated ₹7,000 crore revenue hit after the Centre restricted ethanol procurement from sugarcane juice, syrup and B-heavy molasses.
The move comes as the government seeks to increase domestic sugar availability and control prices.
The policy could further strain sugar mills’ liquidity and raise concerns over timely payments to sugarcane farmers.

And still, crushing has begun.
From the fields to the factory gates and the global sugar market, the season ahead will demand greater foresight, careful planning and informed decisions from the entire sugar ecosystem.
