Zigi the Heliphant 😂🐘😘

Zigi is in full propellor mode!
Every elephant is born with a trunk, but they don’t automatically know how to use it. A delightfully clumsy learning curve ensues, as calves come to grips with this incredible appendage, with its 40,000 muscles.
Zigi is a ‘grandchild’ of our Orphans’ Project: His mother, Zongoloni, was orphaned when she was just a baby and raised in our care. Now, she is nurturing her own family in the wild.
Discover his story - and his mum - at swt.bio/zongoloni

Elephant families return to their sanctuary and show their solidarity with their human benefactors.🐾🐘😍
#SundaysForElephants
At all our reintegration units the focus is on supporting the orphans as they transition back to the wild. For the female elephants this leads on to starting a family of their own.
To date, we know of 77 calves born to elephants we’ve rescued and raised: their wild-living mothers choosing return, so that we might share in their joy.
Three of the births in the last year have been in Umani. Babies Sulwe and Zigi, under the watchful gaze of mothers Sonje and Zongoloni, are two of them.
Your support helps us rescue orphans, who in turn herald a next generation of elephants. Meet them at: sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/o…

The little elephant doesn't know that he looks so cute to us with his unpracticed steps.

Mumo 😢🐘🖤 (2021)
Makena continued to stand vigil over her baby’s body, processing her loss with the courage and stoicism so emblematic of elephants. By this stage she was resting her foot on the calf..
