ALT Reflections On Black History Month. Deniece Bell (she/her), H&PE Educator (Elementary) “As an educator, I have seen and felt the effects of anti-Black Racism throughout the education realm. Ophea is changing the narrative by creating resources to introduce culturally relevant and responsive pedagogy in H&PE. We must continue the conversation in all areas of the curriculum, every day of the year.” Andrea Barow (she/her) Equity & Inclusion Consultant “To disrupt anti-Black racism, we need to be aware of our biases and practice culturally relevant and responsive pedagogy in every classroom. We must recognize that Black learners are not a monolithic group. In order to make sustainable change, we must advocate for Black students and take action to dismantle the oppressive ways that still exist today.” Read Disrupting Anti-Black Racism in H&PE at Ophea.net! ALT Resource of the day: Disability-Centred Safety Considerations. Safety mindedness requires an ongoing commitment to knowing the individual needs of the students and ensuring their needs are prioritized. Physical activity programs that recognize the needs, abilities, and interests of every student and prioritize full participation can positively impact a student’s sense of belonging and contribute to the establishment of a safe, inclusive, and fun learning environment. The new Disability-Centred Safety section on OPASSE is meant to assist in establishing and maintaining a physically and emotionally safe curricular and intramural environment for students with disabilities. The following tools were developed to support teachers: Disability-Centred Safety Considerations; Scenarios for Disability-Centred Safety Considerations; Sample Guiding Questions Checklist for Disability-Centred Safety Explore the full resource at safety.ophea.net
