So my plea to anti-LGBTQ+ Christians is simply this:
Consider why you believe the things you believe.
Is it because of Jesus and Scripture?
OR
Is it because your favorite politician or pundit tells you to? Is it because your party tells you to?

It's as if Hong Kong had suddenly been unzipped to reveal a shadow society lurking beneath: my piece for @nytimes on Beijing's assault on memory, history and identity in HK. But pushback is coming from exiled Hong Kongers, and others like @patrickamadon

The more people that choose to walk, bike and take public transit to get around, the better cities work for EVERYONE, including DRIVERS. Anyone still claiming this is a “war on the car” doesn’t understand how cities work. HT @fietsprofessor for graphic.
An email to all @otago students this afternoon flagged redundancies for “several hundred academic and professional staff… with more job cuts likely later in the year”. Falling student enrolment and insufficient Govt funding cited. The good folk @CriticTeArohi are on the case
Notably, former VC Harlene Hayne celebrated avoiding Covid-related redundancies just months earlier (Mar 21). She claimed low reliance on int students, previous “difficult decisions” (including SSR-related redundancies) “put [the Uni] in a strong position” odt.co.nz/news/dunedin/otago…
Countdown’s newest solution to Aotearoa’s cost-of-living crisis is certainly… novel, I guess. No word as of yet on whether New World or Pak ‘N Save will follow suit and price match

While media have named Jack as the local activist shot in Ōtepoti yesterday, this was without his consent and I want to stress just how little everyone knows at this stage. Please allow some time and privacy while they're recovering, and until we know more. Kia kaha 🩷

okay another journo request: has anyone (ideally NZ based) used a mental health app, either on their own or at the recommendation of a professional? if you'd be keen to talk about it for a story email [email protected] - very welcome to be anonymous!
Unfortunate that even mild measures to attempt to mitigate alcohol harm were rejected. Always good to remember that the “wine with dinner” or “weekend beer” drinkers aren’t what fuels alcohol industry profits — but these help them deflect any attempts at regulation & reform.
Green Party MP Chloe Swarbrick's Alcohol Harm Minimisation bill has failed at its first reading, after only a handful of Labour MPs voted for it.

Agree that offshore private equity is a scourge. But also, some of the most egregious issues re pay, conditions, union-busting in recent times came from “Kiwi” companies like Ritchies (then family-owned), GoBus (then iwi-owned), Tranzit (family-owned) winning big metro contracts
Auckland's 10 worst bus routes for weekday cancellations during February were all run by an offshore private equity company.

It’s good to be transparent about ownership (and I find it fascinating!) while it’s generally a good proxy for responsiveness to local concerns, it’s often a poor proxy for how good a corporate actor they’ll be (I used to drink plenty of Talleys’ Kool-Aid re “supporting local”)
