grim predictions that more than 90% of emperor penguin colonies will be “quasi-extinct” by 2100 😢
Prof. Eliot Jacobson
@EliotJacobson24 Aug 2023
In a year of very sad news for sentient life, this may be the saddest news yet: "When the sea ice breaks earlier, chicks can fall into the water and drown, or they may drift away on floes and the adults just lose them and then they would starve to death" cnn.com/2023/08/24/world/emp…

‘Catastrophic’ loss: Huge colonies of emperor penguins saw no chicks survive last year as sea ice...

As rapidly warming global temperatures help push Antarctica’s sea ice to unprecedented lows, it’s threatening the very existence of one of the continent’s most iconic species: emperor penguins.

Line graph time series of 2023's daily Antarctic sea ice extent anomaly compared to 2016, which was previously the record for the largest magnitude sea ice anomaly. 2023 is a record for low for the current date and now a large outlier. The range in sea ice anomalies between 1979 and 2022 is also shown. Anomalies are computed to a 1981-2010 baseline using passive microwave satellite data.

There have been many fine journalists covering this war from inside #Ukraine. They have been essential to shining a light on a war that Russia would like to keep hidden. The service, and sacrifices, of those who are keeping us outside Ukraine informed is worthy of deep respect.

Such heavy bombings in Kyiv over 48 hours, it is almost fortunate so many people have left the city. This drone shot shows why. #Kyiv #Ukraine️
