❤️We love this so much💙 Thank you for sharing with our Family.
Kyle Merber Remembers Coach Gags ❤️ "A good coach knows how to respond to an athlete, and that’s what Gags understood. Putting strength and speed in a bowl and mixing it up to make a champion didn’t require rocket science. What Gags did best was know when it was time to ramp things up and when to just have fun." 📫 Read more via @TheLapCount: thelapcount.substack.com/i/2…

I love running. I love New York. And while working on The Marathon Book, George Hirsch shared with me a story that reminded me why I love them together. 🗽 Our first narrative podcast special! Let's take a trip back to 1976 and hear about the people who helped make the New York City Marathon what it is today. Before it became the best day in the best city, someone had to dream it up. 🧡💙 LISTEN NOW👇 🎧 APPLE PODCASTS: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcas… 🎧 SPOTIFY: open.spotify.com/episode/2lO…

Rest easy Coach Gag’s
RIP Frank “Gags” Gagliano (1937–2026) 🕊️ A Bronx quarterback who never ran track, Gags became one of the most influential coaches in American distance running. His philosophy was simple: strength plus speed. And when you hear “Hit it!” on the final turn, change gears. The sport has lost a legend. My thoughts are with so many who knew his voice, trusted his guidance and felt his care. citiusmag.com/articles/frank…

This has been a tough one to digest. I’m going to miss this man. Truly ONE of a kind. An incredible human with an infectious personality. Love you Gags
Frank “Gags” Gagliano, the Hall of Fame coach who guided more than a dozen Olympians across six decades, has died. He was 89. Gagliano coached at nearly every level of the sport. As an assistant at Manhattan College, he helped the Jaspers win the 1973 NCAA indoor team title. He spent 18 years leading Georgetown, where his teams won 23 Big East championships and produced 140 All-Americans, and he was twice named national coach of the year. At an age when most coaches retire, he became one of the country’s top professional coaches. He led the Reebok Enclave, the Nike Farm Team, Oregon Track Club Elite and, from 2010, the New Jersey-New York Track Club. His Olympians included John Trautmann, Steve Holman, Nicole Teter, Jonathon Riley, Nick Symmonds, Christian Smith, Julie Culley and Donn Cabral. At the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials, Symmonds and Smith were part of the famous “Oregon Sweep” of the men’s 800m at Hayward Field. A Bronx native, Gagliano was a quarterback at the University of Richmond, not a runner. He began coaching track in 1960 at Roselle Catholic High School in New Jersey, which had hired him with the promise of starting a football team that never came. In 1965, Roselle Catholic became the first high school to win both the DMR and 2-mile relay at the Penn Relays. “I didn’t know anything about track,” he said in a 2014 interview. “But I accepted the offer because I really wanted to coach.” Gags became one of the most influential coaches in American distance running. His philosophy was simple: strength plus speed. And when you hear “Hit it!” on the final turn, change gears. Gagliano was inducted into the USTFCCCA Hall of Fame in 2003. This July, USA Track and Field named the men’s 800m at its national championships in his honor.

🗣️ “With this track background, I actually have to overcompensate on mileage and slowing down strength work because I’m so well trained at the VO2 stuff. We still keep it in there because you need to still work that system, and it’s important. But I think for me, the biggest benefit I get now is from realizing, ‘Okay, I need to completely change my physiology to race for two hours.’” Ahead of the New York City Marathon, 🇺🇸 Joe Klecker explains how years of training for the mile, 3,000m and 5,000m have shaped his move to the roads and why he’s emphasizing higher mileage and aerobic strength to prepare for 26.2. But speed still has a place. Coach Dathan Ritzenhein keeps VO2 max sessions in the build to “keep your engine big.” 🎙️ Hear the full conversation on the latest CITIUS MAG Podcast ⬇️ APPLE PODCASTS: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcas… SPOTIFY: open.spotify.com/episode/591…

Following the news of 🇰🇪 Peres Jepchirchir’s provisional suspension after an out-of-competition sample collected before the Sydney Marathon returned an adverse analytical finding for EPO, two of the last three Olympic women’s marathon champions have now faced doping suspensions related to EPO after winning gold. 🇰🇪 Jemima Sumgong became the first Kenyan woman to win Olympic marathon gold in 2016. Less than a year later, she tested positive for EPO and received a four-year ban, which was later increased to eight years following a tampering violation involving fabricated medical records. Now, today’s unfortunate news with the Tokyo Olympic champion.

The following statement has been shared by the Sydney Marathon: “The TCS Sydney Marathon presented by ASICS is extremely disappointed to learn that Peres Jepchirchir (KEN) has been provisionally suspended by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU), after an out-of-competition sample collected in Kenya prior to the TCS Sydney Marathon, held on 30 August 2026, returned an adverse analytical finding for EPO. Jepchirchir is entitled to due process, and we will make no further comment on the case until that process has concluded. Our commitment to clean sport is unwavering. Every athlete who lines up in Sydney deserves to race on a level playing field, and every participant and spectator deserves to trust the result they see at the finish line. That conviction is why, alongside our fellow Abbott World Marathon Majors, we have invested in increased out-of-competition testing in partnership with the AIU, and why we will keep standing firmly with the athletes who compete cleanly. Under Abbott World Marathon Majors rules, any athlete banned for a doping offence of three months or more is banned for life from all eight Majors.”
The Athletics Integrity Unit has provisionally suspended reigning world marathon champion 🇰🇪 Peres Jepchirchir after an out-of-competition sample collected in Kenya returned an adverse analytical finding for EPO. 🗣️ “I’m gonna look back at this as a miracle.” 🙏 In case you missed it: 🇺🇸 Clayton Young joined me to recap his 2:05:23 personal best and top American finish at the 2026 Chicago Marathon. There was a lot of risk and concern over what it could mean for his 2027 or 2028, if things got worse. He and his wife, Ashley, turned to their faith and kept in check with doctors and coach Ed Eyestone to keep moving forward day-by-day. He hadn’t talked about this side of his buildup publicly until now. FULL INTERVIEW ⬇️ 🎧 APPLE PODCASTS: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcas… 🎧 SPOTIFY: open.spotify.com/episode/06G…
