Texas Is Connecting the Dots on THC
What happens when the consequences of THC extend beyond the person using it? Texas leaders are examining the connections between THC, addiction, mental illness, homelessness, healthcare, public safety, and the costs carried by families, communities, and taxpayers.
Our new article highlights testimony from families, physicians, researchers, law enforcement, and public-health officials—and why prevention, education, treatment, and recovery must be part of the solution—not promoting THC.
Texas has made progress, but the fight is not over.

Let’s Get THC-Mess out of Texas!
I’m thankful for the chance to participate in today's discussion at the Texas Tribune Festival in Austin. I speak out because I care — Every Brain Matters(@EveryBrainMatt . It's important for Citizens for a Safe and Healthy Texas (@CitizensSafe) to be heard. America must listened to the Moms, to get out of this situation! THC can never be safely regulated due to its fat-soluble nature. Predicting who will develop psychosis is impossible—it's like Russian roulette. We only know that higher potency, increased use, and younger age, elevate the risk. Adults are also affected; many are experiencing psychosis because of THC across the country. In Austin, the streets are filled with young men suffering from psychosis and homelessness, and we must recognize THC as a major factor behind this.

🚨 A MAJOR STEP TOWARD ACCOUNTABILITY
The nation’s first class action lawsuits have been filed against major marijuana companies, alleging they marketed marijuana as medicinal while failing to adequately warn consumers about serious health risks.
For years, families harmed by marijuana have been asking for truth, transparency, and accountability. Their stories matter, and their voices deserve to be heard.
⚖️ Have you or someone you love been harmed by marijuana, hemp, or THC products? Every Brain Matters created a Legal Action Screening Guide to help families understand important questions to consider and document their experiences:

Cannabis addiction is rising—and the latest national data challenge the claim that marijuana has little addictive potential.
A study published in JAMA Psychiatry analyzed 186,823 U.S. adults from 2021–2024. Researchers found that past-year Cannabis Use Disorder increased among both men and women:
• Men: 7.3% to 9.3%
• Women: 4.5% to 5.6%
Moderate-to-severe cases also increased. Meanwhile, Alcohol Use Disorder remained statistically stable among men and declined among women.
The findings among adults ages 18–20 are especially concerning. In 2024, Cannabis Use Disorder was more prevalent than Alcohol Use Disorder—even though alcohol was used more widely:
• Men: CUD 14.9% vs. AUD 10.4%
• Women: CUD 14.5% vs. AUD 10.3%
Greater access, normalization, and increasingly potent THC products demand stronger education, prevention, early intervention, and treatment—not continued denial of marijuana’s addictive potential.

Cannabis addiction is rising—and new national research challenges the claim that cannabis has “low addictive potential.”
A new study published in JAMA Psychiatry, examining data from 186,823 U.S. adults, found that from 2021 to 2024, past-year cannabis use disorder (CUD) increased among both men and women. Moderate-to-severe cannabis use disorder also increased.
Among adults ages 18–20 in 2024, cannabis use disorder was more prevalent than alcohol use disorder—even though alcohol was used more widely. The researchers concluded that the increasing prevalence and severity of CUD challenges the perception that cannabis has low addictive potential.
As cannabis products become more accessible and normalized, families deserve accurate information about the risks of addiction and cannabis use disorder.

THC: The Driving Force To Psychosis
🚨 If you care about the mental health of our country, please don’t look away. Families are losing loved ones to addiction, psychosis, and devastating mental health crises—and their voices need to be heard.
On July 7, 2026, the Texas Senate Committee on Health & Human Services heard testimony about the public impacts of commercialized THC derived from hemp.
THC is not just another retail product. It is a psychoactive drug that is a driving force to psychosis and addiction. Behind these consequences are real people, grieving families, and communities struggling to pick up the pieces.
🎥 Please take 2 minutes to watch this video below—and SHARE it far and wide.
How many more families must suffer before we put mental health before THC industry profits?

We really don’t know what the long-term effects are going to be as we have only started poisoning children with THC on a mass scale in the last few years. But we do have animal studies and they are not reassuring with respect to future behavior changes and addiction risk.
CNN is sounding the alarm on marijuana edibles and kids.
As legalization has expanded, accidental marijuana poisonings among young children have surged, driven largely by edibles that look like candy and other familiar snacks.
This was entirely predictable.

Today’s marijuana is not the marijuana of the past. Potency has increased dramatically—and that changes the addiction equation.
This video explains how today’s commercial cannabis market includes highly concentrated THC products such as dabs, waxes, shatter, oils, and other concentrates, many reaching extremely high THC levels.
Higher potency can mean greater exposure to THC, faster reinforcement, and increased risk of cannabis use disorder and other harms. As products become stronger, more concentrated, and more widely available, families deserve to understand what is actually being sold and how modern THC products differ from lower-potency marijuana of previous decades.
Watch, share, and help us educate others about the connection between THC potency, addiction, and the economics of commercialization.

Cannabis Industry Faces Growing Legal Accountability
"The cannabis industry may want to consider converting its grow operations to flowers. The bill for its recklessness and alleged fraud is coming due—and lawyers are coming.”
—David G. Evans, Esq.
A class-action lawsuit filed on May 4, 2026, names four corporate defendants: Cresco Labs, Inc., Green Thumb Industries Inc., Verano Holdings Corp., and Verano Holdings LLC.
The lawsuit, Blackketter et al. v. Cresco Labs et al., alleges that these companies promoted cannabis products as treatments for numerous health conditions while selling THC at unprecedented concentrations. It further alleges that the companies knew their products had not been approved by the FDA to treat any medical disorder and lacked credible scientific evidence supporting many of their health claims.
The case was filed in the Circuit Court of Madison County, Illinois, as Case No. 2026LA000628. These are allegations, and the court has not yet determined liability.
Cresco’s Insurer Seeks to Deny Coverage
The legal pressure ON CRESCO increased when Palomar Excess & Surplus Insurance Company filed a separate federal lawsuit seeking a declaration that it has no duty to defend or indemnify Cresco Labs in the underlying class action.
Palomar argues that the allegations do not fall within the coverage provided by Cresco’s general liability policy. If the insurer prevails, Cresco could be responsible for funding its own legal defense and any resulting liability not covered by another policy.
The insurance case, Palomar Excess & Surplus Insurance Company v. Cresco Labs, Inc. et al., was filed on August 14, 2026, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. View the federal case docket.
This may be the beginning of a much larger legal reckoning. For years, families have carried the financial, emotional, and medical consequences associated with today’s commercial THC products. Now, the companies that manufacture, market, and profit from these products are increasingly being asked to answer for their conduct.
As David Evans put it: “Flowers smell better than weed.”

Daily cannabis use among young adults has reached a record high.
According to new Monitoring the Future data, nearly one in eight young adults ages 19–30 used cannabis daily or nearly every day in 2025—up from 6.9% in 2015. Daily cannabis use now exceeds daily alcohol use among young adults.
The article highlights a dangerous combination: beginning use at a young age, frequent exposure, and today’s increasingly potent THC products. These factors are associated with greater risks of cannabis use disorder, impaired attention and decision-making, anxiety, depression, educational difficulties, and psychosis-related outcomes.
The developing brain deserves protection. Prevention matters, and early intervention can change the course of a young person’s life.

I got this condition in 2012. I was stressed from college I was dealing with a type of neurotoxicity from psyc drugs, I was couped up in my dorm room, I had lost interest in my passions, and although I didn’t like weed I smoked it anyway. It worsened the DP/DR, panic and at one point I started googling delusional disorder because my mind was going into imaginary land. I kept doing it, I put myself in bad situations with friends that would put me down, I kept disrupting sleep….by the end of 2012 it amounted to a first episode psychosis. Weed was still strong in the 2010’s. It’s cellular changes that happened in a short amount of time. 16 years later even if I wanted to put my issues into long term remission I couldn’t. Psychiatry does not have the tools to do this, “metabolic strategies” are temporary but they can work and allow a person to process what has happened. People do not realize how this ruins a perfectly normal person

There's nothing to be proud of, unless you like profiting from people becoming mentally ill?
🎥 **Watch and share: *THC: The Driving Force to Psychosis.***
**Texans—and especially Texas taxpayers—deserve to know the consequences of THC before the state goes any further down the road of normalizing and commercializing its use.**
THC is not just another retail product. It is a **psychoactive drug associated with addiction, psychosis, and schizophrenia**—and the consequences don't stop with the individual. Families suffer. Communities absorb the damage. Taxpayers are left paying for psychiatric crises, emergency care, criminal-justice involvement, disability, and homelessness.
**Texas should not build or promote a commercial THC industry first and ask questions about the human and taxpayer costs later.**
### The research should be a warning:
🧠 **Cannabis-induced psychosis had the highest pooled transition rate to schizophrenia among the substances examined** in a major systematic review and meta-analysis—about **34%, compared with 22% for amphetamine-induced psychosis.**
Source: pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/article…
⚠️ **47.4% of people diagnosed with cannabis-induced psychosis later developed schizophrenia-spectrum or bipolar disorder** in a large Danish study—the highest conversion rate among the substance-induced psychoses studied.
Source: psychiatryonline.org/doi/10.…
🚨 **Young men face an especially alarming risk.** Research highlighted by the National Institute on Drug Abuse estimated that **as many as 30% of schizophrenia cases among men ages 21–30 might have been prevented in the absence of cannabis use disorder.** The underlying Danish research examined health records from more than **6 million people across five decades.**
Source: nida.nih.gov/news-events/new…
### And a psychotic disorder can be only the beginning of the fallout.
Serious mental illness and substance-use disorders can be part of a devastating downward spiral: **psychiatric crises, hospitalization, family disruption, unemployment, criminal-justice involvement, housing instability, and homelessness.**
These consequences don't remain behind the closed doors of one family. **They become a community problem and a taxpayer burden.**
Read more about the connection between commercialized marijuana, serious mental illness, and homelessness:
everybrainmatters.org/2025/1…
**Texas should confront these risks before expanding a commercial THC industry—not after the damage is done.**
**The public deserves the facts before policies that promote use—not after another family is already living with the consequences.**

There should be no debate about this: intoxicating THC products should not be sold to children.
Anyone buying these products should know exactly what they are and exactly how much THC they contain.
Right now, it’s the Wild West. That’s dangerous — especially for our kids and young adults — and Congress must act now to change this.

Legalization’s two biggest promises just collapsed.
New federal data show marijuana use rising and addiction rising with it.
📈 Marijuana addiction among adults 40–50 is up 97%
🚨 Nearly 1 in 7 Americans aged 27–28 now use marijuana almost every day
This isn’t a side effect of commercialization. It’s the business model. 👇
