True mastery-based (or standards-based) education would focus purely on results. Attendance would be the means to an end, not the goal.
Public school attendance last fall averaged 90 percent, according to a federal survey, a figure that experts say remains too low. The data comes as the White House urges states to focus on chronic absenteeism this year. wapo.st/421BenS

Know what's better than an employer's mental health fair? A job that doesn't jeopardize mental health.

Waiting for supporters of classical education and champions of western civilization to condemn the removal of Michelangelo's "pornographic" David from a Florida classical school's curriculum.
Waiting for the media to call this a hate crime against Christians.

PS -- I still plan to revive the podcast with an altered format. Someday, I'll have enough time to do it. Perhaps in June. Stay tuned.

I haven't checked this account in 4 months. Busy w/ 3 kids, wife, town council, coaching little league, Scouts, tutoring, teaching, & more. I'm relieved to see everyone is still behaving exactly the same, harping on the same ideas, beating the same dead horses. Carry on.

The result of learning is power. If students are learning valuable content and skills, then why does pedagogy matter? I'm all for intrinsic motivation & lofty ideals, but if, in the end, Ss' lives are better for what they've learned, then do a few Starbursts really matter?

Also, Patrick Henry College generally sucks. The only people who want to go there are homeschoolers. Test scores may be great, but [shudder].

A paycheck and a captive audience. 😉

I DEMAND STANDARDIZATION. But also differentiation and individualized instruction. I DEMAND STRONG RELATIONSHIPS WITH STUDENTS. But also avoid sharing personal information, biases, preferences, and anything that could possibly be interpreted as political or values-based.

Help them understand how badly they suck. They don't want solutions because they don't see the problem. You have to give them a mirror.

Students look at reading the way you look at Fortnight. So what.
Students look at email the way you look at a telegram.

When being observed, I ALWAYS ask the principal at least one question. If you're in here, you're in here. We're all participating.

Life is bribery. There are incentives (& disincentives) in everything we do. You change how you interact w/ Ss, they receive grades, etc. If candy isn't your thing, cool. But if another T uses candy & kids actually learn, who cares? Are we about learning or moral stands on candy?
I am not a candy teacher. I refuse to bribe students like they are animals because they are capable humans. However, I’m one of the only teachers on staff right now not using bribery.

That's the plan. I was actually ready to start recording again a few weeks ago, but I'm running for Town Council, so that's eating into my schedule a bit. I'm hoping to relaunch soon!
