“The Pit" at Trona High. This field, covered with sand and gravel, is the only one of its kind among American schools. In the harsh climate and highly salty soil, where grass cannot grow, The Pit has become a symbol of perseverance and love for sports for the local team, Trona High School Sandmen. The stadium is about 100 yards long, where students train and play their games. Despite the hot weather and limited resources, this field has become an essential part of the school’s athletic life. Despite the challenges, the Trona High School team continues to fight to preserve football traditions in their community." Credit: Searless Valley Facebook Group
