The NHL Alumni Association is devastated to share that Claude Lemieux has passed away at the age of 60. Born in Buckingham, Quebec, Claude was selected by the Montreal Canadiens in the second round of the 1983 NHL Entry Draft and would make his NHL debut just a few months later on October 13, 1983 and scored his first career NHL goal on December 4, 1983. Claude split time between the Canadiens organization and the QMJHL from 1983 to 1985, capturing the President’s Cup with the Verdun Junior Canadiens in 1985 as QMJHL playoff champions, while earning the Guy Lafleur Trophy as Playoff MVP. The very next season, Claude recorded 10 goals and 16 points in 20 playoff games as he and the Montreal Canadiens won the Stanley Cup. Claude remained with the Canadiens for an additional four seasons before joining the New Jersey Devils ahead of the 1990-91 season. In 1994-95, his fifth and final season with New Jersey, Claude led the Devils to their first Stanley Cup championship, registering 13 goals in 20 playoff games, taking home the Conn Smythe Trophy as Playoff MVP. As a member of the Colorado Avalanche in 1995-96, Claude was once again an integral part of team history as the Avalanche hoisted Lord Stanley’s Cup for the very first time in 1996. Claude played 297 regular-season games in an Avalanche uniform before rejoining the New Jersey Devils in November of 1999, and for a fourth and final time, would be crowned a Stanley Cup champion on June 10, 2000. Claude later played for the Phoenix Coyotes and Dallas Stars before making a comeback with the San Jose Sharks during the 2008-09 season. Internationally, Claude represented Canada on several occasions, including capturing a gold medal at the 1985 World Junior Hockey Championships and winning the 1987 Canada Cup. He was loved by his wife and four children, and on behalf of the Lemieux family, we kindly ask that everyone respect their privacy during this difficult time. Memorial service details to follow.

Please keep the family of Stepinac basketball coach Patrick Massaroni in your thoughts today. His father, Richard, passed away suddenly this morning. Richard Massaroni was involved in youth sports and recreation in Scarsdale and with White Plains Little League for many years. He had a career at IBM before retiring to devote his time to his family and community sports. You couldn't miss him at any Stepinac event for the last two decades, either. All three communities are mourning his loss. Personally, I got to know Richard and his wife, Doreen, when Patrick was a student at Stepinac. They and their four children were extremely close-knit. I'd often heard about the family group chat, which light up during Stepinac basketball games. Richard always had an incredible level of pride in Patrick, and not just for becoming one of the elite basketball coaches in the region. He did a lot of mentoring for his son as a coach. Richard, no matter the travel distance, traffic or weather, rarely ever missed a game. And I can still remember the pride - and a little bit of shock - in Richard's eyes in Lake George in 2018, celebrating the night Stepinac upset LuHi in the Federation tournament. He and I shared a good laugh when Patrick had to leave the restaurant to go to the hotel laundry room to wash the teams uniforms for the next day. As much enjoyment as Richard found watching his son coach, I've witnessed how much more he relished being a grandfather. God Bless the Massaroni Family in this time. BREAKING: An end of era in Stepinac football. Hall of Fame head coach Mike O'Donnell is retiring after 37 seasons. A.J. Magee, a former assistant in the program, will replace O'Donnell as Stepinac head coach. Magee spent the last few seasons coach in college, most recently at Wagner. O'Donnell, who will remain as the school's athletic director and involved in football, was only the sixth head football coach in the program's 75 year history. In his time, he won 238 games, four @NYCHSFL AAA Championships, three state crowns, as well as three AA league titles. He helped so many kids go to college and started many on their paths to the professional level. Personally, Coach O'Donnell is one of my favorite people ever in this business. He was the first person I ever interviewed as a reporter in 1998. His team just lost a heartbreaker in what would be a winless season. He sat and calmly answered questions from an 18 year old kid who didn't know what was doing. I'll never forget his professionalism. That day changed me forever and I owe so much of my own career to him for it. Believe me when I say O'Donnell suffered some of the worst losses imaginable and survived some extremely tumultuous seasons. He also led Stepinac on one of the greatest stretches of football this county has ever seen. Through all the highs and lows, the man never changed. O'Donnell is always classy, always kind. His only focus was on helping his players. He never once exuded any shred of ego for his accomplishments. O'Donnell is loved by everyone in the Stepinac community. And he’s admired and respected throughout the Catholic League and in coaching circles around the Tri-State. One thing I've learned in my time is that a lot of coaches across all sports compile impressive numbers and championships. They deserve the recognition. But the great ones, like O'Donnell, will be far more remembered years from now for how he kindly he treated people, how generous he was and how much he cared about his players and his school. For that, "O'D" is truly a legend.
