Mike Deegan, the head baseball coach at Denison University, has stopped being impressed by job interviews. “I’m less and less impressed with the actual interview process, because people can tell you whatever they want,” he told The Daily Coach. “If I’ve seen you work in some capacity or seen you engage in your work, those are the signals that this person could be really good in our system.” So he watches instead. A candidate working one of Denison’s camps. A candidate on the recruiting trail, a player and a family in front of him, no prepared question waiting. We ask people how they handle conflict. We never see them in conflict. The interview gives us the answer someone prepared. The work gives us the person.
