A few excerpts from @Travis_Sawchik’s latest blog on command, more thoughts below and full blog linked in replies ⬇️
Much of what goes into training Accuracy is still more of a theory than a proven science right now, but I don’t think that’s the case for Command. To understand how that can be true we just need to separate the skill from the strategy.
For the skill- I’d say the evidence points towards it being trainable, and like pretty much any other fine motor/movement skill, your floor, ceiling, and capacity for progress are going to be somewhat individual. As fun as it is to do so, the answer isn’t just blindly throwing random objects, you’re going to need to know what specifically is going wrong and why that’s happening before you can correct it in a meaningful way.
On the strategy side- I’d say if your targeting strategy is not built with your miss dispersions in mind you’re just leaving free game on the table and you’re actively behind what’s happening at the highest level. If you’re punching tickets and not walking anyone now you’re probably fine, but if your misses seem to hurt more than they should that’s a good sign you could benefit from some tweaks.
Thanks to @RiverHawkBB for hosting us yesterday and sharing data to go along with our tagged data.
I'll write something up on this after the Falls over.
After we tag the game our app creates the reports, upload to Drive and share in our group. Same goes for pitching side as well.
Updated for our Fall Games just a piece of our hitting reports that are built out for our hitters after each game.
I love having catchers who have the ability to pick balls in the dirt but realistically our most effective way to control pitches that are bounced is the block.
From our tracking data over the last year we worked hard to make this a reality for our catchers.
Need to be able to block pick and step out.
Every game we needed at least two of these tools. Over half the time we needed to use all three tools.

LOVE THIS!!!
90% of what I dig into starts with a player. A question, a comment, a feeling. When I don’t know, I can guess or I can go look.
“I feel like I have to block from box to box.”
So I looked MLB 2026: 69% of 'dirt balls' land within 6 inches of the plate. 87% within a foot.
Keeping the ball in front takes two tools: the block and the pick. Each one owns a different part of the dirt. The goal is to own both.
Idea that I'm working with based off last week and Turang's home run to LCF. Trying to visualize where players are 'potentially' making contact with the baseball.
The visual here is what I'm most interested in. Big estimate going on here take with a grain of salt.
Everyone wants to glorify blocking and it is important. But 1/4 balls in the dirt was a pick for us over the past calendar year.
Being able to do it all will remain undefeated. The game asks too much to be one dimensional.
MLB's top framer in 2026, Dillon Dingler (+8.9 framing runs), works every pitch back toward the middle of the plate.
High pitches come down. Low pitches come up. Edges come in. Pitches out of zone are carried and held longer than those in zone.

Working on a piece looking at the Turang Swing against Skubal from the other day. You can see just how outlier a Left On Left Sinker driven to the LCF Gap really is.
More than half are pulled, the a huge majority of those being groundballs.

The 0-0 pitch used to be a way to get ahead, but for Skubal, it's become a weapon.

I wrapped up my month-long project ranking MLB front offices this morning with the top ten operations in baseball. Has been a lot of fun and work to put together, I hope everyone has enjoyed it. @baseballpro baseballprospectus.com/news/…
