The Christian Devil has a history. The Satan of later Christianity was not simply sitting there, unchanged, from Genesis onward. In Job, ha-satan is a subordinate heavenly accuser. He appears in the divine court, operates under God’s authority, and receives permission before testing Job. He is not yet the independent cosmic enemy of God found in later Christianity. Then the historical setting changes. Judaism spends centuries in contact with the Persian and wider Iranian world. Zoroastrianism already had Angra Mainyu, later called Ahriman, a destructive spirit associated with falsehood, corruption, demons, cosmic conflict, and the eventual defeat of evil. The strong argument is the correlation between the development of Ahriman and the New Testament Satan. Early Israelite religion has a subordinate adversary. Then comes prolonged Iranian contact. During the Second Temple period, Jewish literature develops demonology, apocalyptic conflict, supernatural rulers of evil, resurrection, final judgment, and a more cosmic opposition between good and evil. By the New Testament period, Satan looks dramatically different from the ha-satan of Job. That does not prove a one-to-one Ahriman-to-Satan derivation, but the chronological and conceptual convergence is real. Scholars of Zoroastrianism such as Mary Boyce argued that Iranian religion substantially influenced Jewish eschatological thought. Then Revelation makes another major move. Genesis never says the serpent in Eden is Satan. Job never identifies ha-satan with the serpent. But Revelation 12:9 explicitly identifies “the great dragon,” “that ancient serpent,” “the Devil,” and “Satan.” That is a theological synthesis. Several older figures and symbols are pulled into one cosmic identity. Once Revelation becomes scripture, that synthesis can be read backward into Genesis. The Eden serpent becomes “obviously Satan” to later Christians even though Genesis itself never says so. There is also the authorship problem. Revelation says its author is a man named John on Patmos. It never says he is John son of Zebedee, one of the Twelve, or an apostle. Its Greek, grammar, vocabulary, and literary style are strikingly different from the Gospel of John. Dionysius of Alexandria noticed this in the third century and argued that the two works came from different writers. So Revelation was very likely written by a Christian prophet named John, not John the Apostle. That matters because early church figures had strong institutional incentives to connect authoritative books to apostles. Irenaeus is especially important. His anti-heretical program emphasized apostolic succession and apostolic teaching. A Revelation written by John the Apostle fit that framework well. That does not mean Irenaeus knowingly lied. It does not require a conspiracy. Institutional incentives are enough. Put the sequence together: Job: ha-satan is a subordinate heavenly accuser. Persian and Iranian contact: Judaism encounters an older cosmic dualist tradition involving Angra Mainyu and the defeat of evil. Second Temple Judaism: demonology and apocalyptic cosmic conflict expand. New Testament: Satan becomes a much more developed cosmic enemy. Revelation: serpent, dragon, Devil, and Satan are explicitly fused. Church tradition: Revelation is increasingly treated as apostolic and becomes canonical. Later Christianity: that synthesis is read backward across the Bible. The strongest thesis is not “Ahriman became Satan.” It is that the Christian Devil emerged through historical development, with strong chronological and conceptual correlation to Iranian religious influence, followed by a decisive synthesis in Revelation and reinforcement through later canon and church authority. The Devil has a history. Once you trace it, the idea of one unchanged Satan from Genesis to Revelation becomes very difficult to defend.

Vice President JD Vance: “I think it’s driven home how much the war against fraud is not just about protecting taxpayer dollars, as much as that is very important to every person on this stage. It’s also about protecting important benefits… You know, nobody loves paying their taxes, but they accept it because they know it’s going for a good and a useful purpose. That’s not going to happen unless we take fraud more seriously and it’s why the President’s effort to do just that is so important."

There’s so much fraud we can’t even comprehend it.
Assistant Attorney General Colin McDonald on suspected illegal aliens stealing benefits from American citizens: “Guzman stole the identity of a United States citizen to fraudulently obtain $22,000 in SNAP benefits, $98,000 in Medicaid benefits, and $45,000 in Section 8 housing benefits.”

🚨 BREAKING: JD Vance is in Ohio right now, about to speak from an FBI field office on the Trump administration's massive fraud takedown. The administration is going after billions of dollars in fraud across Medicare, Medicaid, welfare benefits and more. Fox's Harris Faulkner put it simply: "He is following the money and taking down the bad guys." For years, Washington shrugged while crooks robbed taxpayers blind. Those days are over. Americans have one question: where did the money go? Vance is about to start answering it.

The Trump administration will NOT tolerate scammers stealing from our citizens. DHS will continue to locate, arrest, and deport the illegal aliens engaging in this fraud to protect our citizens in need. Recent @ICEgov arrests of illegal aliens who have abused SNAP benefits meant for Americans include:🧵

Dr. Oz says Americans don’t pay nearly half their income in taxes just to watch fraudsters steal money meant for our most vulnerable. “Many Americans, however, are already helping us for free.” “They’re doing it because it makes our people angry that we spend almost half of our life working to pay taxes.” “They do all that, they pay all their bills, every parking ticket gets paid for.” “But the money that they’re putting into the system gets sloppily siphoned off to pay off fraudsters rather than directing towards those services that are needed.”

.@AAGMcDonald: "These cases and allegations reveal the scope of deception, greed, and human exploitation permeating SNAP fraud schemes. These are not paperwork crimes. The tools of justice must be, and are, fully activated to protect the innocent, provide for our most vulnerable, punish the wrongdoer, and restore the public’s confidence that those who engage in fraud will indeed be brought to justice."

ANOTHER GUILTY VERDICT: FoF fraudster Muna Fidhin guilty all 9 counts of wire fraud, bribery & money laundering. She owned a Burnsville biz, M5 cafe, billing the gov't nearly $1M to feed hungry children. Instead, paid off a mortgage, bought a Lexus SUV & wired $$ overseas. @FOX9

This is unbelievable
.@AGToddBlanche: "This is a concerted effort to literally take food out of the mouths of children and it’s going to stop. We have U.S. attorneys on the stage behind me. We have the inspector General from @USDA behind me, and they are leading the effort to stop this. We've indicted men and women in 13 different districts just in the past seven weeks, and that effort will continue for as long as it takes."

.@AGToddBlanche in Ohio with @VP on SNAP Fraud: "We have uncovered $42 MILLION dollars in fraud associated with the SNAP program. This fraud comes in all different ways. It comes from these criminals actually stealing the money off the cards that are used to purchase food by our most needed in the country. It comes from just outright theft and taking money from the people that are supposed to be receiving these efforts."

The Christian Devil was not originally a fully formed character in the Hebrew Bible. The concept developed over centuries, and Zoroastrianism may have contributed significantly to that development.

Jesus inherited his conception of Satan from Second Temple Judaism, which had already spent centuries developing ideas about supernatural evil, possibly under significant Zoroastrian influence.

Jesus didn't need to derive his understanding of Satan directly from Job. He lived hundreds of years after the beginning of Persian rule, within a Jewish world where supernatural evil had already been discussed and reinterpreted for generations. Jesus probably inherited a conception of Satan that had already evolved considerably beyond Job. Early Christianity then developed it further. Zoroastrianism may have been one of the historical influences on that evolution.
