January 2026 edition of CoinTracker Compass: Your monthly briefing on crypto accounting, regulation, and institutional adoption.
This month:
Bitcoin’s Q4 reversal, a global easing wave, shifting regulatory timelines, and why stablecoins + RWAs are no longer “emerging” but core infrastructure.
The biggest reporting shift in U.S. crypto history begins next year and most platforms aren’t ready for it.
Starting with 2025 activity, U.S. digital asset brokers must report customer sales and dispositions to both taxpayers and the IRS, including custodial exchanges, hosted wallet providers, stablecoin issuers that redeem tokens, and payment processors that take possession of digital assets.
Brokers will need to report customer identifying information, digital asset identifiers, disposition dates, gross proceeds, and starting in 2026 for covered assets; acquisition dates, cost basis, and holding periods.
Projected operational challenges:
→ Collecting certified taxpayer documentation
→ Building accurate cost-basis engines
→ Reconciling noncovered assets and missing acquisition data
→ Establishing audit-ready reporting pipelines
CoinTracker Enterprise provides the infrastructure to meet 1099-DA requirements: cost basis computation, CPI ingestion, reconciliation, and compliant reporting workflows.
Crypto platforms are facing new operational demands under the updated 1099-DA rules, including standardized transaction reporting and mandatory cost basis.
Meeting these requirements will require robust data pipelines, accurate reconciliation, and scalable reporting infrastructure.
We break down the implications + where CoinTracker Enterprise can support compliant implementation.
