Tyler Rogers is the only MLB pitcher with an average release height under two feet. The focus of my off-season training has been lowering my own release point from roughly three feet to Rogers-range, but twelve years using the same slot has grooved an extremely deep attractor well. Early in the off-season, @Crider_HP programmed variable slot and implement work to destabilize my old angle and open up different solutions within my movement landscape. More recently, I’ve built familiarity with my desired slot by constraining start positions at/below the goal, adding rhythm to access the new angle dynamically, and then using variability/representative context to stabilize the pattern. My recent bullpen average? 1.8 feet. Good training, as they say.

A platform that’s simple, clean, and built around the real loop of development: assess, plan, track, feedback, adapt, repeat. Made by athletes, for athletes. No more mediocre.

62% of UCL tears in MLB pitchers happen in the first three months of the season. Not August, not September. April through June. The culprit isn’t the radar gun — it’s poor ramp-up. Bodies enter the season unprepared, velocity spikes, and the elbow pays the price. (Read the full breakdown in today’s Applied Baseball Science post.) open.substack.com/pub/velou/…

A bullpen stalwart for two seasons at @UCSB_Baseball, Cole Tryba was utterly dominant out of the @FirebirdsCCBL 'pen this summer, going 3-0 with a 1.07 ERA and a 28-7 K-BB in 25.1 IP over 11 outings. @aaronfitt has more on @tryba51 and other Orleans pitchers ⤵️

Had a great mid-season meeting with the Phillies player development staff that made me reflect on how many low-future-value minor leaguers (such as myself) optimize for the wrong reward function. Most players naturally favor a slightly positive expected value approach with very little variance or downside risk, prioritizing the status quo of job security and health through slow, incremental gains. While this strategy lowers the chance of getting immediately demoted, released, or injured, it often reduces the likelihood of achieving the ultimate goal: reaching the majors. By definition, a low-FV prospect has a slim chance of making the show; a safe low-variance approach might prolong a minor league career but won’t meaningfully increase the odds of becoming a big leaguer. Many of these players would be better served by embracing a high-variance approach that carries greater risk but also greater upside. Drastic changes like altering pitch usage/arm slots or aggressive velocity/bat speed training can be uncomfortable and risky but may represent the only path with enough upside for a low-FV prospect to make the majors. Counterintuitively, high-variance approaches may even have negative EV, meaning they’re more likely to make a player worse than better. But if the true goal is to make the big leagues rather than merely survive in the minors, the bigger risk may be not taking one. Is it better to have a 90% chance of getting slightly better and staying healthy with a 0% shot at the majors? Or a 90% chance of getting worse or injured with a 5% chance of making the show?

Next up - Aaron Shortridge Shorty sat 93 with a 5 pitch mix for strikes. Possesses unique potential with a high slot supination bias and velo that continues to climb. Dude’s gonna have a long career. Will be a big pick up for whoever decides to give him a chance.

RHP - AJ Puckett (@Puckett_AJ15) flew in from the DR where he’s racked up over 40 dominant innings, showcased a ridiculous plot (T96.9), then flew back to the DR and shoved his next outing. This guy 100% has the stuff to compete in the show. Sinker, 4SFB, CT, SW - all elite.

Aaron Shortridge gearing up for @TreadHQ Pro Day this weekend. Has been sitting 91-94 with more in the tank after spending the off-season out here in Charlotte. Career 4.07 ERA in 437 IP. Updated arsenal mixing 5 pitches for strikes as velo continues to climb 📈

Big ups from Scott Servais tonight on Mariners advance scout Sam Reinertsen: "We don't see the Phillies. We see them once a year. You never know how they're going when you see them. He nailed it. The scouting report we had before the game was right on point. So, credit to Sam."

Seeing + WAR gained is great; helping guys maximize career earnings is one of the best feelings in the world as a coach. However, I am always reminded that the same effort/intensity/focus needs to be poured into those who are hurt/underperforming and thus losing "value".
In 2020, Clay Holmes emailed us with a 5.91 ERA & -0.9 career WAR. In 2022, Cole Ragans had just logged a 4.95 ERA & averaged 92 mph w/ -0.1 career WAR. When Tanner Scott reached out, he had a career ERA of 4.61 & a 6-year WAR of 1.1. A 🧵 on how all three became All-Stars ⬇️
