Coloring Squared Math

A physicist lined up the shadow of a spinning ball with the shadow of a weight bouncing on a spring, and they moved as one. The setup is almost nothing. A ball is fixed near the edge of a flat disc that turns at a steady speed. Next to it, a heavy weight hangs from a spring. A single bright lamp throws both shadows onto a white screen. Seen face-on, the 2 motions look nothing alike. The ball travels in a perfect circle at constant speed. The weight just bobs up and down, speeding up through the middle and slowing to a stop at the top and bottom of each bounce. Then you look at the shadows. From the side, the disc becomes a thin line and the ball's circle collapses into a straight up-and-down track. Its shadow rises, slows, stops, falls, and speeds up through the middle. The shadow of the weight on the spring does exactly the same thing. Once the disc's speed is matched to the spring, the 2 shadows rise and fall together, cycle after cycle, as if they were connected. That's the hidden link in simple harmonic motion, the rhythm behind springs, pendulums, guitar strings, and tuning forks. A spring pulls back harder the farther you stretch it. That one rule produces exactly the same motion as the side view of something going steadily around a circle. It's also how physicists find the period of a spring without advanced math. The time for 1 bounce is the time the matching circle takes to make 1 full turn. Work that out and you get the familiar formula: the period depends on the square root of the mass divided by the stiffness of the spring. A heavier weight bounces more slowly, and a stiffer spring bounces faster. Every vibration around you is a circle seen from the side.
