ALT Text reads: "INDIGENOUS PEOPLE'S DAY, OCTOBER 12TH Indigenous Peoples' Day reminds us to learn the fuller story about the land on which the United States was built. For centuries before 1492, indigenous people had a wide range of cultures, with their own unique languages, governments, cultures, economies, and histories. European colonization brought devastating population loss, warfare, enslavement, and forced relocation; sadly, the consequences of colonialism persist to this day. However, the beauty of indigenous culture also remains, and many of those languages, art forms, and foods still inform our greater culture. Indigenous Peoples' Day asks us to look beyond the Columbus narrative and learn about the hundreds of nations who proceeded him and live to this day." A floral pattern lines the bottom of the frame.

ALT Text reads: "NATIONAL COMING OUT DAY, OCTOBER 11TH National Coming Out Day began at the height of the AIDS crisis when activists Jean O'Leary and Robert Eichberg wanted to honor the prior year's March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights. They argued that visibility can turn an abstraction into a reality; a queer person was not an ephemeral victim or villain, but a friend, sibling, coworker, neighbor, or child. National Coming Out Day both recognizes that coming out is a key personal form of political advocacy and an often necessary step in coalition building and acknowledges that coming out may not be for everyone. It can be, for some, complicated or unsafe, and - while coming out should always be celebrated - one should always be able to come out on one's own timeline." Dyslexia Awareness Month both urges testing for it and ridding ourselves of the stigmas around those accommodations. It is also worth being thoughtful about how we use the word; think again betore saying you are "dyslexic" simply because you made a typo or misread something. A little precision can help preserve the distinction between an occasional mistake and a lifelong disability." Illustrations of two students in the lower corners.

ALT Text reads: "INTERNATIONAL DAY OF SIGN LANGUAGES, SEPTEMBER 23RD Sign languages have a beauty, range, and depth all to themselves. In 2017, the United Nations established International Sign Language Day to recognize the linguistic rights and cultural identities of deaf people around the world. The date commemorates the founding of the World Federation of the Deaf in 1951, an organization that has advocated for the rights of deaf communities internationally. Currently, there are over 300 sign languages, and each one has as many complexities and contexts as any spoken language. Likewise, around the world, there are countless deaf theaters that showcase not only the skills and heart of deaf actors, but also sign language's ability to capture human emotion just as thoroughly as any sound-based language could." Illustrations along the bottom of people signing to one another.

This is no accident; instead, it points to the fact that DEI, at its core, celebrates the ideals we most associate with that document: fairness, freedom, and the right of all to achieve their best. While sometimes this may feel more like a promise than a reality, we all feel like it's our job to strive toward that better world for all of our fellow Americans." However, this month is far more than an independence celebration. It instead highlights all of the ways that our own country's history is inextricably tied to Latino and Hispanic history. From our own language to our music to our cuisine, American culture is , in part, Latino culture. Furthermore, Latino scientists have shaped our understanding of the world. ALT Text reads: "INTERNATIONAL DAY AGAINST NUCLEAR TESTING, AUGUST 29TH Established in 2009, the International Day Against Nuclear Testing calls for an end to all nuclear testing. It reminds us of the horrific side effects that nuclear testing can have on surrounding communities. While testing is theoretically happening in remote areas, people do live near those sites and, very often, are from communities often deemed as "lesser" by the government. Furthermore, nuclear testing has only one true goal at its heart: continued preparedness for nuclear war. Considering that August also marks the anniversaries of the bombings of the civilian populations Hiroshima and Nagasaki, we must commit ourselves to acknowledging the true horrors of nuclear warfare and to a future without nuclear bombs."
