I also don't really understand why this code doesn't compile in the first place. I get that `same_item` is constraining the item references to be the same lifetime, but not how rustc is picking what that lifetime is.

Hah! I spend an unreasonable amount of time trying to figure out what index my sata cables are plugged into when changing anything, but even that doesn't always work.

My best guess: a windows update renumbered the partitions so grub can't find /boot anymore. Not actually that hard to fix if you have live media (mount / /boot and /boot/EFI, chroot, grub-install) But your solution requires less upkeep.
