"The hermeneutics of suspicion seems to cut both ways... We might try to deny it but we are constituted by myths and symbols all the way down."

I didn't vote (because I'm still too bitter to cast a ballot for Democrats), but feel pretty happy about the elections this week. A giant No to the Iran war and No to AI.
One of the most enduring "luxury belief" dynamics centers on Israel. The average working class voter thinks it's insane that Israel gets to dictate U.S. foreign policy and forced us into war with Iran. Yet we get lectured by the elites in media that this is somehow a great idea.

I wrote a critical assessment RFK Jr's thought and political movement for @compactmag today

Guy who voted for Trump because he’d keep us out of endless wars in the Middle East
favorite new releases of 2026: Inferno by Boards of Canada (music), The Rouse by China Mieville (books), and, yes, You Can See Everything (movies).
AI hasn't killed the arts yet!
great review of the new biography. Kunkel breaks the taboo that has been in effect since Harold Bloom canonized Blood Meridian; the Judge's philosophy of war is not scary, it's hokey as hell.

though she does have a shady marriage in her past she doesn't want to talk about, it still seems unlikely Ilhan Omar married her own brother. She may have married someone for fraudulent immigration purposes but it's just porn to say it was her brother

biggest revelation from the new Cormac McCarthy biography is that he befriended the unabomber's brother and helped console David Kacysnski for the guilt he felt about turning his brother in. This seems to have been the one un-selfish thing Cormac ever did.
I first read this article a decade ago and have never known what to make of it. Maybe the time has come to talk openly about men being sexually assaulted by women.

A few years ago the equivalent of these student protesters would've been chanting Defund the Police, "ACAB," and other prison abolitionist slogans
So... Anthropic believes that they’re creating a conscious being that may well kill us all and that we need be concerned about hurting the feelings of this new being? that's actually how the company understands their project?

Bogus rape statistics have been circulating for a long, long time. Here's an article from 2000 debunking the claim that only 2 percent or rape claims are false.

getting a lot of bookmarks, that's encouraging. I came back to this cursed website to be a humble conduit of truth
I first discovered this article over a decade ago, well before #MeToo. The rape panic just never ends. It's such an emotional subject that even just trying to learn empirical facts is dangerous,
I was seriously thinking about voting Democrat again, so it's good to be reminded of their position on due process. A party that gives in like this to moral panics every single time isn't fit to govern
