The fact that Uncle Ercole exists in the Soprano family history adds a whole different layer to Tony’s obsession with family.
Tony spends so much time measuring people by strength, status, and intelligence that Ercole’s story exposes an uncomfortable side of him. When Tony talks about his uncle, there’s affection in the way he remembers him, but there’s also the cruelty of a family that struggles to treat someone different with dignity.
That’s one of the things The Sopranos does brilliantly. The characters talk constantly about family loyalty, tradition, and respect, yet those values often disappear when someone doesn’t fit their idea of what a person should be.
Tony can feel genuine love and still participate in the same judgment he claims to dislike.
A family’s character isn’t revealed by how it treats its strongest members. It’s revealed by how it treats the person who can’t offer it anything in return.

The Great Pumpkin retweeted
“Democrats NEED Joe Manchins!”
No, they don’t. He spent four years either watering down or outright blocking Joe Biden’s agenda, took every national media appearance he could get to say “Republicans are right, my party is crazy!”, and then quit without running for re-election.
