LLMs mirror our biases, and when they make security decisions, those biases become an attack surface. Our paper "When AI Agrees Too Much" was directly accepted at @ICSEconf '27 (119 of 2,375 submissions). Here's what we found 🧵

"Code Reading" by @CoolSWEng is that rare book that actually concerns itself with teching people how to read large codebases. Every newcomer in an organisation will be confronted with multi-million codebases on day 1 that they have to grok in order to do their job. Strangeley - this is not something I was taught at Uni. I mean - my code writing teaching was poor. (how could it be better when the teachers were not developers themselves? they simply didn't know) But code reading - that was not even on the radar. It occured to me too late in my Uni education that - "no one can teach you what they themselves don't know". Wish a good samaritan spelled that to me earlier. 😂

A researcher says a journal published an "apparently AI-generated, research article purporting to have been written by me." xitter.cf/CoolSWEng/status/18335… Three similar cases we've reported on. retractionwatch.com/2024/08/…
This is outrageous! The Global International Journal of Innovative Research has published an, apparently AI-generated, research article purporting to have been written by me, complete with a DOI. Why? To lend credence to the tile? global-us.mellbaou.com/index… doi.org/10.59613/global.v1i3…

Claude 3.5 is a solid reviewer of social science papers. Just did an experiment where I reviewed a paper on my own, then, after I was done, had Claude do the same. We overlapped on 70% - I found key issues it did not, but it also found points I missed. Useful as second opinion.

Takes time - no way a round it. I've used the ancient Source Navigator, ctags, any IDE that can scan & index & navigate fast source code. Chip at the edges - try to change something not too hard but nontrivial. A good book "Code Reading" by @CoolSWEng may give you more ideas.

Sophisticated methods and instruments propelled scientific progress more than strict hypothesis testing through observation and experimentation. doi.org/10.1093/pnasnexus/pg… This highlights the importance of systems building as a computer science research method.
