I drew him with lighter colors one time.
The higher contrast I think looks better tho so even this one still has pretty high contrast compared to the sonic 1 version.
Personally tho I was never trying to completely replicate the original box art style.
People are saying they're wrong.

Well... Here's a fun bit of old concept art from when I started on Sonic 3 HD (2014 or so I don't remember). The idea is that the BG would have more variation depending on where you were in the zone. This is the end area of Angel Island Zone act 1, following the miniboss.
