New from me: I got a peek at @UCLA_Law + @CourtWatchLA/@LADefensx’s new report showing that despite statewide bail reform, unaffordable cash bail is still an issue 💴 💵 💴 I’ll be in courts throughout LA County for the rest of the year monitoring this. lapublicpress.org/2024/06/uc…
Cash bail is supposed to be affordable. A new study of LA courtrooms says it's not.

1/2 NEW: groundbreaking report w/@RaceNYU: *Excessive Sentencers*. We use an innovative dataset -- appellate decisions -- to identify judges who imposed such lengthy prison sentences that the appellate court (2-5 judges) felt compelled to reduce them “in the interest of justice.”

“No judge has ever lost their job setting bail on someone.” A NYC judge whispered that. To a public defender. Before depriving their destitute client of freedom. This happens every day. Judges are intimidated to throw poor people in cages. Thread on a history of intimidation:

Court Watch NYC is officially relaunching as an entirely volunteer-run project! We are excited to guide CWNYC into the future as an anti-carceral project connecting court watchers with campaigns, individuals, and organizations that most need our support.

Injustice happens in empty courtrooms. But in a growing number of places, people are holding the system accountable by showing up in court. Volunteering to court watch. Documenting what they see. We’re watching. This powerful short film (scored by Fiona Apple!) tells our story:

Division 30 at the CJC is a true disgrace. An obsolete and inadequate facility where meaningful communication with defendants is impossible. People’s constitutional rights are trampled on every day, especially those requiring the assistance of a court interpreter.

The County’s recent investments into the Justice, Care and Opportunity Department have the potential to transform a system that has harmed low-income, unhoused, and communities of color. @LACountyBOS, we finally have a chance to do things the right way. #CareNotCages
