What part of the inflation rate is the RBA really targeting?
Inflation rose by 4.34% in the year to September. In looking at what could or should be done to deal with this inflation problem, it is important to see what drove that result.
Let’s look at just 3 components of the CPI basket: Petrol, tobacco and electricity.
Of the 4.34% annual inflation rate:
Petrol contributed 0.7702 ppts.
Tobacco contributed 0.1666 ppts.
Electricity contributed 0.3034 ppts.
Together these accounted for 1.24ppts of the 4.34% rate. The smart ones can see that without this trifecta of illusion, annual inflation would be 3.10%.
Rates hikes and petrol?
Tobacco is the Eddie the Eagle of the CPI basket. The ABS use the price of legal ciggies.
Electricity price increases are still artificially high as the ending of various rebates on 31 December 2025 artificially boosting its contribution to today’s inflation rate. From January next year, this effect will wash out.

The September labour force data were horrible.
Unemployment rate has risen 0.6 ppts in just 8 months and shows no signs of consolidating.
What's more, wages growth is consistent with considerable slack in the labour market & there's still the lagged effects of 100bps of hikes since February.
Throw in the fact that the fall in house prices is poised to reach record levels which will cruel consumer demand & threaten bank bad debts & it is frankly impossible to see how the RBA can hike again.
Unless it is inept or incompetent, of course.

To put it all in perspective, WTI crude oil is still lower than it was 15 years ago. And lower than it was in the 2022 peaks.
We are hyper fixated on the short term value of oil and its impacts on overall inflation, however, the longer term view is still much less scary… 😦
