Treating #PoliceCorruption as an investigative problem misses the point. Corrupt cops often operate in networks that evade complaint-driven systems. Police heads must ensure internal accountability, intelligence-led investigations and disciplinary action. ISS Today #SouthAfrica crimehub.org/iss-today/natio…

SA elections: young South Africans aren’t apathetic – they are alienated Ahead of SA’s 4 November local elections, ISS research in Ekurhuleni and eThekwini reveals deep alienation among young people who feel ignored by politicians and local government. Yet this disengagement doesn’t mean withdrawal from public life. Youth still volunteer in community policing, healthcare and other initiatives. But their frustration enables exploitation by movements like March and March, who redirect their anger towards foreign nationals. Across many democracies, alienated young people are turning to those who offer someone to blame. SA must avoid deepening this trend. Young people need to be heard and included in decisions affecting them – not merely courted before elections. ISS Today by Thandi van Heyningen crimehub.org/iss-today/sa-el…

In many democracies, alienated youth turn to political parties offering someone to blame. In South Africa, anti-migrant groups like #MarchandMarch tap into youth frustration. But #election promises won’t be enough – councillors must hear young people and draw them into solutions. ISS Today crimehub.org/iss-today/sa-el…

Young South Africans aren’t apathetic about #elections – they’re alienated from a system that ignores their needs. ISS research reveals that local government is experienced as absent or unconcerned. Even so, many young people are active in community initiatives. ISS Today crimehub.org/iss-today/sa-el…

Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia’s reset agenda prioritises discipline, accountability and removing officers involved in wrongdoing. But rebuilding the SAPS requires more than scrutiny and sanctions. Its nearly 30-year-old Code of Conduct should be replaced with a concise oath that promotes professional pride, dignity, respect and moral courage. Honest officers must be supported in resisting corruption and rejecting the code of silence that protects wrongdoing. Strong ethical leadership and a renewed professional identity are essential to restoring public trust. ISS Today by David Bruce crimehub.org/iss-today/a-new…

The #SAPS Code of Conduct is nearly 30 years old – South Africa needs a renewed commitment to ethical policing. A concise new oath emphasising dignity, respect and moral courage could help officers challenge police #corruption and rebuild public trust. ISS Today by David Bruce crimehub.org/iss-today/a-new…

South Africa’s police reset must go beyond vetting, disciplinary measures and removing corrupt officers. Rebuilding #SAPS requires restoring pride in the uniform and strengthening the ethical commitment of honest officers. A new policing oath could help achieve this. As conversations about crime increase over the weekend, remember that sharing information comes with responsibility. An unverified crime alert can spread fear, damage reputations and make it harder for people to distinguish fact from speculation. Before forwarding a message, take a moment to verify the source. If information cannot be confirmed, avoid presenting it as fact. Responsible reporting and information-sharing help communities respond to crime with greater awareness rather than unnecessary panic. 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝗶𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗿𝘂𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 Prosecutions are essential, but are a difficult and slow means of dealing with graft. By the time a conviction is secured, public money has gone, contracts have been manipulated, and institutions damaged. Regulators, Treasury, the Auditor-General and Special Investigating Unit are able to pursue civil proceedings, restrict activities and intervene to prevent further harm. Why isn’t more early action being taken? Fragmentation is a key reason, as powers are dispersed across bodies with varying mandates, priorities and capacity. SA needs the institutional capacity, leadership and political will to use available tools, and when those entrusted with these powers fail to act, they must be held accountable. Anti-corruption action isn’t just a matter for the criminal courts. The same conduct may raise tax, procurement, regulatory, disciplinary and civil issues and several responses can proceed in parallel rather than waiting for a trial. In 2025/26, the SIU prevented ±R1.9 billion in state losses and ensured contracts worth >R25.7 billion were set aside. Regulators, Treasury and the Auditor-General can similarly stop #corruption early without waiting years for convictions. ISS Today by Martin Schönteich crimehub.org/iss-today/south…
