New Cronos EVM Mainet v1.8 upgrade is targeted for October 22, 2026
Excited to share that the Cronos EVM mainnet v1.8 upgrade is targeted for October 22, 2026.
This is a huge milestone for the base layer, integrating with the latest Cosmos SDK while delivering native parallel execution, lower propagation latency, and much deeper Ethereum compatibility.
Here’s what’s under the hood:
- Parallel EVM (Block-STM): Native multi-threaded execution embedded directly into the Cosmos SDK layer for higher sustained throughput.
- Faster Networking: Swapped the P2P stack to libp2p and introduced an app-side mempool to cut block turnaround overhead.
- 90%+ EVM Equivalence: Added 80+ Ethereum API methods so native tooling and dApps work seamlessly out of the box.
- Plus 40+ upstream stability fixes.
Simulation & Benchmark Highlights:
- Faster Block Times: Shaved block propagation latency by ~20%, sustaining median block times under 400ms across high-load sweeps.
- Throughput Headroom: Multi-node cluster simulations showed significant double-digit throughput gains alongside lower gas saturation before approaching network limits.
Peak Execution Ceiling: In ideal single-node batching tests, the engine delivered a ~15% boost in peak execution throughput at the hardware limit with zero execution stalls.

With this upgrade, we are bringing ~20% faster median block times, an app-side mempool for lower latency and 90%+ EVM API equivalence.

The Cronos v1.8 mainnet upgrade is starting now.
Block production will pause at block 101,485,000, with around 30 minutes of expected downtime. The explorer, EVM mainnet endpoints, Cronos Portal mainnet endpoints and IBC transactions are expected to resume once the network is back.
On-chain state is unchanged. We will post here once the upgrade is complete.
The Cronos v1.8 mainnet upgrade is happening today, 22 Oct 2026.
The upgrade is set for block 101,485,000, expected between 7AM and 8AM UTC. Track the countdown: explorer.cronos.org/block/co…
Expect around 30 minutes of downtime. Block production, the explorer, EVM mainnet endpoints, Cronos Portal mainnet endpoints and IBC transactions will be unavailable during the upgrade.
All on-chain state carries over unchanged, and regular users don't need to do anything. Node operators, please upgrade cronosd to v1.8.0 at the upgrade height.

Two tokenomics proposals are now at governance.
Under the proposed strategy, we would put 100% of revenue from Ult and Cronos Launch into buying CRO on the open market and burning it every month. The Strategic Reserve would fund staking rewards while that happens, so the chain stays secure as supply comes down.
Separately, 228,000,000 CRO would be burned from the community pool. We have burned 50M four times. This one takes the total to 428M.
