In early modern #navigation, theory met practice at #sea. Cosmographers had the models, but #pilots had the skills—and they almost always won.

The final workshop of the RUTTER project has begun: two and a half days not to present the project, but to share knowledge and engage in discussions with colleagues and friends at the #AcademiadaCiências de Lisboa.

How many known shipwrecks? Around 250,000. 3 million is a UNESCO estimate of all the world's shipwrecks. An informative article that says little about the ongoing destruction of sites by trawling for fish along the ocean floor. Thanks to Kate Conley.

Thanks to @javiprotass for alerting me to the Guardian piece about two Ming-dynasty shipwrecks in the South China Sea (no location). One ship (1506-1521) carried more than 100,000 ceramics, an amount equaled by earlier Song- and Yuan-dynasty wrecks. theguardian.com/science/2023…
