Almost all on-chain DeFi today will eventually vanish. Before the rise of DeFi and even Bitcoin, there was already a well-established financial market with highly specialized and well-capitalized participants. In this market with incomplete information, professional traders had already gained significant advantages. Most of today's DeFi is built on-chain, providing complete market information for free. This means that professional traders who already had great advantages gain even more in the name of a "fairer market," ironically. The incidents we saw in risky on-chain derivatives markets were inevitable from the start. Completely transparent order books and trading information put all market participants in a vulnerable position, which no one favors, which in turn means the situation cannot last long. Market participants are motivated to seek out markets with better information protection to weaken their opponents' unreasonable advantages. From this perspective, it provides another explanation for why today's most successful DEXs are AMMs rather than order books: pooled swaps mix orders together, effectively preventing certain orders from being targeted (at the cost of impermanent loss). This suggests that almost all current DeFi will eventually disappear: either replaced by competitors offering privacy and incomplete information markets or evolving drastically into new forms capable of providing transaction privacy themselves. Transaction privacy not only reduces exposure but also levels the playing field among different market participants by preventing MEV exploitation, creating a truly "fairer" market. Therefore, privacy is essential for DeFi rather than just a natural right. There are two ways to provide privacy for DeFi: one is layering privacy technology on-chain by developing private smart contracts; the other is going off-chain—transferring part of financial logic off-chain to achieve a hybrid model. Both approaches face challenges: The first has an inherent conflict between privacy and global consensus, requiring complex cryptographic techniques which would be inefficient and rely heavily on additional security assumptions; while fewer intrinsic conflicts exist within the second approach, maintaining trustlessness, decentralization, and composability off-chain poses significant challenges too. #web5
