The White Horse isn't painted. The figure is formed by deep trenches cut into the hillside and filled with the brilliant white chalk beneath the surface. At 110 meters (360 feet) long, it is the oldest and largest surviving hill figure in Britain.

The Uffington White Horse — Oxfordshire, England. Carved into a chalk hillside nearly 3,000 years ago... this enormous figure stretches 110 meters (360 feet) from nose to tail. Its sleek, abstract design looks surprisingly modern. Who created it? No one knows for certain. Radiocarbon dating places its origins in the Late Bronze Age or Early Iron Age, making it one of Britain's oldest and most enduring landscape monuments. For almost three millennia, generations have returned to clear away the encroaching grass—ensuring the White Horse remains visible to this day. #AncientMysteries #AncientHistory

In 1937, astronomer Ludovic Mann suggested the carvings might represent celestial alignments or a prehistoric star map...

The Cochno Stone — West Dunbartonshire, Scotland. One of Europe's largest and most mysterious prehistoric rock carvings. Discovered in 1887. Covered with more than 90 intricate symbols... Cup marks. Rings. Spirals. Geometric patterns. Carved into a sandstone slab measuring over 13 × 8 meters. No one knows exactly what they mean. A map? A ritual site? A way of recording the sky? More than 5,000 years after it was carved... the Cochno Stone continues to challenge our understanding of prehistoric Britain. #AncientMysteries #Prehistory

That makes a lot of sense, as many of them lead to the open sea. Who knows what hides beneath it..

The evidence shows the ruts were there before Malta became an island

The Cart Ruts of Malta. Hundreds of parallel grooves carved into solid limestone. Some run for only a few meters. Others stretch for miles across hillsides, intersect, split apart, and even disappear beneath the sea. Many are believed to be thousands of years old. Yet nobody knows with certainty who made them, when they were made, or exactly what they were used for. Ancient transport system? Agricultural tracks? Something else entirely? Whatever their purpose, they remain one of the Mediterranean's most intriguing archaeological mysteries. #AncientMysteries #Malta

The tomb was discovered in 1952 after archaeologists uncovered a hidden staircase sealed for more than a thousand years.

The Tomb of Pakal — Palenque, Mexico. Discovered deep inside the Temple of the Inscriptions. Carved more than 1,300 years ago. It contains one of the most famous images in archaeology. Viewed in its original orientation, the carving depicts the Maya ruler K'inich Janaab' Pakal amid a complex scene of death, rebirth, and cosmic symbolism. But viewed sideways... many people see something entirely different. A figure leaning forward. Hands on controls. Feet on pedals. Even what appears to be flames behind him. The image became famous as the so-called "Maya Astronaut." Whether sacred symbolism or something else, it remains one of the most extraordinary pieces of ancient art ever discovered. #AncientMysteries #Maya

Stonehenge was not built all at once. Construction and modifications continued for more than 1,000 years.

Stonehenge — England. Yesterday, thousands gathered to watch the summer solstice sunrise align with Stonehenge. But the story may be even older than we thought. Recently, archaeologists identified a much larger prehistoric circle hidden beneath the landscape near Stonehenge. Known as the "Flagstones" enclosure, evidence suggests parts of it may date to around 3200 BC. Potentially making it centuries older than the first phase of Stonehenge itself. For generations, Stonehenge was treated as an isolated mystery. Today, it appears to have been part of a vast ceremonial landscape filled with monuments, avenues, burial mounds, and ancient circles. One monument is impressive. An entire sacred landscape is something else entirely. #AncientMysteries #Stonehenge

The Nineveh Star Map — Mesopotamia. Discovered among the ruins of the library of Ashurbanipal in ancient Nineveh. A clay tablet covered with strange symbols, celestial markings, and cuneiform inscriptions. For most scholars, it is an astronomical tablet — part of a long Mesopotamian tradition of observing and recording the heavens. But its unusual appearance has inspired decades of speculation. A star chart? A celestial guide? A record of an extraordinary event witnessed nearly 3,000 years ago? Whatever its exact purpose, it reminds us that the ancient peoples of Mesopotamia were among the first great astronomers in human history. Long before telescopes. Long before modern science. They were already mapping the sky. #AncientMysteries #AncientAstronomy

It is possible, but I don't think we really know with certainty. Whatever it is, though, it shows advanced knowledge of the skies.
