This @nytimes piece should make your blood boil...
"Health Insurers Reap Hidden Fees by Slashing Payments. You may get the bill."
A #NYT investigation shows how a data firm, MultiPlan & insurance cos. are financially incented to cut reimbursements as much as possible, even if it means saddling patients with large bills.
“I’m being ripped off. It’s not right," said Dynlacht, who has been left with $1000's in medical bills.
Their formula is simple: The smaller the reimbursement, the larger their fee. In some cases, the fees far exceeded the amount paid to the treating doctors. "Court records show that Cigna took in nearly $4.47M from employers for processing claims from addiction tx centers in CA, while the centers received $2.56M. MultiPlan pocketed $1.22M.
"As MultiPlan became deeply embedded with major insurers, it pitched new tools & techniques that yielded even higher fees. Former MP negotiators said their bonuses had been linked to their success at reducing payments, incentivizing a hard-line approach."
MultiPlan has annual revenues of ~$1 billion.
"Last year alone, MultiPlan told investors, it identified nearly $23 BILLION in bills from various insurers that it recommended not be paid."

@Propublica's been doing great reporting about health insurers denying claims. Perhaps some of their reporters -- like @fieldsrobin @DavidArmstrongX, @mayatmiller, @carolinechen -- will want to dig into your friend's story. I hope she finds a way out of this nightmare, Brian.
