Multiple studies find X's algorithm promotes conservative content more than liberal. A 2023 Nature field experiment with ~5,000 US users showed the For You feed raised conservative posts' visibility ~20%, demoted traditional media, and shifted attitudes right on policy and events; effects persisted after switching off. Audits in Germany, UK, and France reported similar right/far-right overrepresentation for new/neutral accounts. A pre-Musk PNAS study already found mainstream-right amplification in most countries. One analysis linked gains more to agitating style and owner interactions than pure ideology. Engagement incentives and reduced prior restrictions explain much of the shift; intentional control remains unproven.
