The best pitcher in baseball refuses to lift weights, warms up by throwing a javelin, and scouts hitters with a paper notebook. The Dodgers paid him $325 million and then hired his sensei too.
The notebook makes sense once you see the rest of his system.
Yamamoto trains under Osamu Yada, who has never told him to touch a barbell. Javelin throws instead of long toss. Handstands, back bridges, breathing work. The Dodgers studied the routine, decided they couldn't improve it, and hired Yada rather than change Yamamoto. During free agency, one team's recruiting gift to him was a team-logoed javelin, just to prove how deep their research went.
The results broke baseball's assumptions. Last November he threw 96 pitches in World Series Game 6, then came out of the bullpen and closed Game 7 the very next day.
Now look at the dugout. Every MLB club runs Hawk-Eye, a dozen cameras per stadium tracking spin, tilt, and swing path on every single pitch. Yamamoto has all of it on an iPad ten feet away.
He writes by hand anyway.
Japanese player development bakes this in. Kids keep baseball journals from little league on, charting every at-bat in their own words. The logic survives contact with analytics. League data tells you what a hitter does on average. A pitcher's own notes capture what that hitter did against him tonight, pitch by pitch, while the at-bat is still fresh. By the third time through the order, he's working from a document no analytics department can generate.
Mookie Betts watched this for two seasons. This spring he started throwing javelins too.
Baseball built the most surveilled playing field in sports. Its best October pitcher still trusts the notebook in his back pocket more.

Justin Verlander broke down in tears, talking about his daughter after his final start.
“I gave everything for this. I left home. She’s in school, and I wasn’t there,” he said, before pausing to collect himself.
“There’s just a level of commitment it takes to be great at something. And I hope she understands... I’m just so happy that I get the opportunity now to make up for lost time.”

In 2014 Justin Verlander tossed a baseball to Kate Upton. In 2017 they were married. 9 years later, their eldest daughter brought her dad off of the pitcher's mound one last time. 20 years of baseball and a beautiful family. This is the quintessential American game.

4 years ago Bo Davidson had quit baseball, he was playing slow pitch softball and working at a warehouse. 3 years ago he was virtually unknown playing in community college when a Giants scout accidentally discovered him. On Monday, Bo made history with a hit, stolen base and run in his MLB debut. Never give up on your dreams. @NBCSGiants #sfgiants

Bo Jackson won the state decathlon title in high school doing only 8 events!
Was afraid of the pole vault and hated the mile run, so just got enough points in the other events to beat everyone else.
No one comes close to him as an athlete. Imagine Derek Henry or Aaron Donald playing MLB and hitting home runs and throwing runners out at home from Right Center.

Imagine you are 25 years old, batting for Australia in Madras. It is 40°C. The humidity is 80%.
By the time you reach a hundred, you are vomiting on the pitch. You lose control of your bladder. Your memory of the day starts to go blank.
You walk up to your captain and tell him you have to retire hurt.
Allan Border does not call for a doctor. He calls you a weak Victorian and says he'll send out a real Australian instead. A Queenslander. Greg Ritchie.
So you stay. You bat on out of pure rage, and you make 210. Then they help you to the shower, and from the shower to hospital, where you end up on a saline drip, around 8 kilos lighter than when the Test began.
And the match you nearly broke yourself for? Five days later, it ends in a tie. Only the second tied Test in history.
That was Dean Jones, 40 years ago today. One of the bravest innings Test cricket has ever seen, and the game still refused to give him a winner.
The 1971 World Series became a showcase for Roberto Clemente’s 5-tool brilliance.
“The Great One” hit .414 (12-for-29) with 2 homers, 2 doubles, and a triple.
He also unleashed one of the greatest throws in the history of the game.
Clemente was named World Series MVP as the Pirates beat the Orioles in seven games. #ClementeDay

I kept this story in my pocket for a long time....
September 15th is Roberto Clemente Day.
Every year in Pittsburgh the whole organization fans out across the city. It's like Christmas. Roberto's family is there, Vera and the boys.
My first year as manager in Pittsburgh was 2011. We celebrated. We shook hands and moved on.
We didn't win.
19 consecutive losing seasons.
2012 rolls around. Same day, same celebration. We had another losing season, our 20th consecutive.
After the ceremony, Roberto Jr. walked over.
"My mom wants to talk to you."
We went into the dugout. Me, Vera, and her three sons.
She spoke in Spanish. I played four years of winter ball so I understood enough. She wasn't angry, but she was passionate. And I kept hearing Roberto's number come up.
Roberto Jr. translated.
"My mother wants you to know that there cannot be a 21st losing season. That was Roberto's number. It would be a disgrace to his legacy."
She was staring right at me.
Before I could even think about what to say, words came out of my mouth:
"I promise you, Vera. That won't happen."
Roberto Jr. looked at me and said, "You made my mom a promise. I hope you can keep it."
I said, "I hope I can keep it too."
I didn't tell my coaches. I didn't tell the players. I told my wife. That was it.
The next year, 2013, we broke the consecutive seasons losing streak. Ended it at 20.
On Roberto Clemente Day that September, Vera came walking across that field.
And I probably got one of the most meaningful hugs I've ever received in my life.
The players did all the heavy lifting. I just got the hug.
Some promises are worth making before you know if you can keep them.
