The more I think about James Gunn's THE SUICIDE SQUAD canon podcast, the more I wonder if the intended audience wasn't really the fans. What if it was David Ellison? Think about it. Gunn just spent nearly an hour explaining which parts of a five-year-old movie are canon to the DCU. A movie he previously described as an "imperfect memory" is now apparently the FIRST canonical DCU film. Why now? Gunn says it's to celebrate DC Super-Villains Month, but this feels like an awful lot of effort to answer a question that wasn't exactly keeping people up at night. Then I started thinking about the Skydance takeover. Under David Zaslav, Gunn and Peter Safran were given considerable creative freedom to build their universe. Now they're answering to a new corporate leadership team headed by David Ellison, a guy who actually comes from film production and has a personal interest in where these franchises are going. Gunn has even acknowledged that Ellison wanted to know the secrets of the DCU and where the story was headed. So here's my theory. What if Ellison wants a clearer understanding of what he's actually inherited? What's canon? What's being carried over? What is Gunn building toward? Because Gunn and Safran might run DC Studios, but Ellison is ultimately one of the people signing off on their future. And if he decides something needs to change, that creative freedom only goes so far. Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but Gunn seemed oddly stiff during the podcast. It felt less like something he was excited to do and more like something he needed to get on the record. And I can't shake the feeling that this whole thing was less about explaining the DCU to fans and more about establishing what the DCU actually is for the guy who just bought the company. Because there's a big difference between telling fans to trust your vision and having to explain that vision to the guy who can change it.

Watched “Clayface.” I wasn’t familiar with the character from DC, but I enjoyed the film. I’ve always loved the science fiction films of the 1950s and ’60s, particularly those about lonely men who gradually transform into something monstrous through scientific experiments, accidents, clinical trials, and the like. Richard Matheson’s novel “The Shrinking Man” (1956), and films such as “The Fly” (1958) and “4D Man” (1959). The facial disfigurement also reminded me of “Eyes Without a Face” (1959), “The Face of Another” (1966), and “The Skin I Live In” (2011). As a body horror film, “Clayface” will undoubtedly be compared to “The Fly” (1986) and “The Substance” (2024). But this is the story of a method actor who can become anyone through his performances, only to suffer a disfiguring facial injury and eventually gain the extraordinary ability to physically transform into anyone. Whether you see it as the story of a man who takes his revenge and descends into villainy, or as a tragedy, changes the very face of the film. While I was there, I also picked up a reprint of the original theatrical pamphlet for “The Man Who Stole the Sun.”

LOST MEDIA: In 1993, an animated series titled ESCAPE FROM JURASSIC PARK was in development. It was eventually cancelled before full production; however, not before a lot of work was done, including a pitch trailer. At long last, that trailer has been unearthed.

Metamorpho has always been one of my favorite DC comics characters - an unapologetically strange character from one of the wildest periods in DC history. It's been fun bringing him to life with Anthony Carrigan in the DCU. He debuted on this date in THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD #57, written by Bob Haney, with pencils by Ramona Fradon and inks by Charles Paris. @DCOfficial

It’s one thing to watch someone become a monster, but another to feel everything that person is losing along the way. Tom Rhys Harries gives an astounding performance in Clayface, bringing an emotional weight to the horror in a way that feels incredibly personal. Happy anniversary to Matt Hagen, who debuted in DETECTIVE COMICS #298.
