1. He does not lose his job. His term continues until January 2029, unless something extraordinary happens. 2. The Democrats can make life harder for him politically. Instead of simply expecting his party to support him, he may have to compromise with the Democrats to get laws and budgets passed. 4. They could try to impeach him. The House can vote to impeach Trump, but that does not automatically remove him. Removing him requires a two-thirds vote in the Senate, which is a very high hurdle. And what does this mean for South Africa? 🇿🇦 If Trump's party loses control of Congress, it could create more opportunities for South Africa to engage with American lawmakers who disagree with his approach. But it does not mean US policy towards South Africa will automatically change. Trump would still have considerable power over foreign policy. In fact, current reporting on the November 2026 elections says the Democrats have won the Senate and are close to taking the House. The simplest way to understand it: Trump keeps the keys to the White House, but the Democrats could gain more control over the people who approve the money, make the laws and investigate his decisions. That is why the midterms matter. They cannot automatically remove Trump, but they can limit how much he gets his own way.
