I just saw the (early) consequences for California below, I think your $20 Trillion damages estimate for this El Nino is looking pretty safe, Professor. Usual apathy and denial in the comments. nitter.gq/accuweather/status/211…

New Action Campaign: Have you noticed how a UN-commissioned finding of genocide turned into a claim? This was Sky News's headline on Monday night: "UN report claims Israel 'genocide' in Gaza has continued after ceasefire" The UN commission of inquiry made no claim. It investigated cases, applied the law and reported its findings to the General Assembly: - Israel is still committing genocide in Gaza. It has murdered 1,431 people after the 'ceasefire', at least 300 of them children. - In the occupied West Bank, Israel committed crimes against humanity, extermination, torture, rape and persecution. It has murdered 254 Palestinians since October 2023. - Israel answered neither of the commission's two requests for information. Then the media got to work. We counted every word of 15 "news" reports: - Israel's denial got 1,178 words. Palestinians got 46, all from one diplomat defending the Palestinian Authority. Not one report quoted a Palestinian about what Israel did. - Haaretz, an Israeli paper, gave the findings more words than any of the 15: 840, or 84% of its report. Sky gave them 407 (58%), The New York Times 532 (61%), Reuters 319 and The Independent 312. - Sky wrote "claims" or "alleges" about the findings nine times, even about the UN's own death toll. In Sky's report Palestinians "died", while Israelis "were killed" in a "terror attack" it called "the atrocity". - Sky gave 21% of its report to Israel's denial and to doubts about the commission. No outlet outside Israel gave them more. - Reuters never told its readers that the commission found crimes against humanity. CBC ran the same copy. - Not one report said Israel had refused to answer the commission. A high school girl in Mexico just won a gold medal for putting out fires with a speaker. It plays one deep, low hum and the flames die in about 5 seconds. DARPA tried the same idea back in 2012 with a rig so big and clunky they never took it any further, and hers runs on a 12-volt battery and a speaker she can carry around. Sound is just air being pushed back and forth. A low note at 30 hertz means the air around the flame is flipping direction 30 times every second. Flames only exist in a thin layer where fuel vapor mixes with oxygen. Shake that layer hard enough and it keeps getting stretched thinner, the heat gets pulled away faster than the flame can make more, and eventually the flame rips right off the fuel. Whatever tears off is too cool to keep burning, so it just goes out. DARPA's report put a number on how little it takes. Once the air at the flame is moving about half a meter per second, which is barely a breeze, the flame goes out, and pretty much any pitch can get there if you crank the power high enough. Low notes just get you there way cheaper, because a speaker moves a lot more air on each push when the pitch is low. Two engineering students at George Mason figured this out by trial and error in 2015. They started with super high pitches, 20,000 to 30,000 hertz, and all the flames did was shiver. It only worked once they dropped down to 30 to 60 hertz, which is basically the bass on a hip-hop track. Ángela Karime's build is a 12-volt battery, a frequency generator, an amplifier and a speaker, tuned to 30 hertz. She named it Vortex Tech and talks about it shooting out little rings of air, and that's real physics. When loud, low sound gets pushed through a narrow opening, the air curls up into rings like a smoke ring, and those rings carry a puff of air way farther than the sound would get on its own. In her tests it put out small flames from about 2 meters away. She went through five prototypes and over 100 tests in about a year, and she says it's put out burning wood, flammable liquids, electronics and cooking oil. The cooking oil one is a big deal. Throw water on a grease fire and it flashes into steam and flings burning oil all over your kitchen, which is exactly the kind of fire where you'd want something that doesn't put anything into the pan. Now, sound can't cool anything down, so a big fire sitting on red-hot fuel can come right back the second the speaker shuts off. The George Mason guys worried about the same thing in 2015, and it's why this is still a prototype for small flames and the red extinguisher under your sink isn't going anywhere yet. Space might end up being where this matters first. Up there water floats off in blobs, while sound works the same with or without gravity, and acoustics researchers have already published experiments on fighting fires with sound on spacecraft. She's still in high school, and she's already working on a version that spots a fire and puts it out by itself. The gold in Indonesia also came with a special award that gets her into another international competition.

🚨 The @BoardofDeputies has declared @TheGreenParty a racist, antisemitic party for its opposition to Zionism. We need to unpick just how deeply hypocritical this position is, and the extraordinary double standards at its heart. The Board fiercely defends Zionism and the Jewish right to national self-determination, while in 2025 actively opposed Britain's recognition of Palestine as a state. It acknowledges the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, but largely frames it as just that: a humanitarian catastrophe. It hasn't recognised Israel's actions as genocide or unequivocally condemned the Israeli government's overall conduct in Gaza. So here's the fundamental contradiction... Zionism isn't simply an abstract religious belief in Jewish self-determination. It's a political ideology whose founding objective was to establish a Jewish homeland IN PALESTINE. A land already inhabited by another people, whose slaughter, dispossession, displacement and denial of fundamental rights cannot simply be erased from the conversation. And yet, that's EXACTLY what's happening. Those speaking up for Palestine often say you can't present a genocide as a debate between two equally legitimate sides. But we're not even getting that far. When Jewish self-determination is fiercely defended, while Palestinian statehood is opposed, and the human suffering is discussed without confronting the political responsibility for it, Palestinians themselves are being erased from the very conversation about their future. What does it say about our understanding of racism when the rights and humanity of an entire people can be treated as secondary, or even not at all? The most damning question of all is what this says about our own @UKLabour government. Because whether through fear of being branded antisemitic, political self-preservation, or a calculated move to mask its own complicity in the atrocities being committed, this is a position our government continues to accommodate, defend, and aplify. Rather than unequivocally standing up for Palestinians being killed by the IDF, it continues to embolden its political relationship with the Israeli state. We've reached a point where challenging an inherently racist and dangerous political ideology is treated as more outrageous than the mass killing, dispossession and destruction being carried out in its name. Antisemitism is racism. It must be confronted wherever it exists. But opposition to Zionism is not antisemitic, it's morally and lawfully correct. And no political ideology, state or government should EVER be granted immunity from scrutiny, particularly when the consequences are measured in human lives. @andyburnham @ZackPolanski @jeremycorbyn @corbyn_project #GazaGenocide‌ #FreePalestine

That story about Google killing hundreds of thousands of trees in Finland for its data center project is such a perfect microcosm of what capitalism is doing to our world. Recent mass media headlines are saying the tech giant "illegally" cut down "250,000" trees, but both claims paint an inaccurate picture of what actually happened. Google killed 400,000 trees (250,000 near a town called Muhos and another 150,000 near the village of Otanmäki), and unless the company's executives actually wind up going to prison for this, their actions cannot properly be described as "illegal". I don't know who first coined the saying "If the penalty is a fine, then it's legal for rich people," but it certainly applies here. The Finnish Licensing and Supervision Authority has reportedly ordered Google to suspend all “measures that significantly change the environment," saying it will "consider enforcement proceedings and fines" if the megacorporation does not comply. Google's parent company Alphabet has a net worth of around four trillion dollars. Whatever paltry penalties Finland might impose for these ecocidal actions, it won't have any meaningful effect on Google. Giant corporations do this shit all the time. They calculate that the fines incurred by their abusive actions will be dwarfed by the massive profits they generate, issue fake apologies as needed, and leave it to their armies of lawyers to minimize the damage. That's why the Sackler family is still worth billions despite all the fines Purdue Pharma was slapped with while creating the US opiate epidemic. A 2017 Harvard study titled “The Opioid Epidemic: Fixing a Broken Pharmaceutical Market" contains the following paragraph: "Although civil claims and criminal charges were brought against Purdue and its executives, the resulting penalties paled in comparison to extended-release oxycodone profits. In May 2007, the company and its president, chief counsel, and former chief medical officer pled guilty to falsely marketing extended-release oxycodone as 'less addictive, less subject to abuse and diversion, and less likely to cause tolerance and withdrawal than other pain medications.' As part of the plea bargain, Purdue agreed to pay the federal government $600 million and 27 states $20 million. The three executives agreed to $34.5 million in fines but avoided jailtime. By contrast, Purdue has earned an estimated $31 billion in total revenues from extended-release oxycodone since its launch. Rather than deterring fraudulent marketing, the penalties simply became a cost of doing business." A cost of doing business. That's how things work under capitalism. The law primarily exists not to protect people or the environment, but to protect the interests of capital. If you destroyed a Google data center you'd probably be charged as a terrorist and spend decades in prison, but Google can destroy the natural world around you and get off with a finger wag and a symbolic fine. If you stole millions of dollars from your employer you'd go to prison for grand larceny, but if your employer steals millions from its employees you need to win a class action lawsuit to get back what they stole from you. Proponents of capitalism often pretend they support minimal government intervention in civilian affairs, but their entire model is at all times propped up by state power using force to protect the haves from the have-nots at every level of our society. Corporations are free to destroy the environment, destroy your health, rob you, exploit you, and manipulate your government to their advantage, and if you ever take action to stand up to this world-devouring onslaught, the state will lock you in a cage. In school we are taught that that the law exists to protect ordinary people from bad people, but that's not true at all. Under capitalism, the law exists to protect the very worst among us from everyone else. That's why we are seeing our planet being turned into dust and ashes for no reason other than shareholder profit. It's an insane system, and it needs to end. These freaks are feeding our entire biosphere into the woodchipper.
