1st grade is pivotal. If U want to decrease referrals & behavior problems focus on 1st grade. Kids who learn to read by 1st grade have a decreased probability of having behavior problems, anxiety, & depression throughout their school life. Dr. Fletcher Big Sky Literacy Summit

It’s easy to get discouraged by *that kid* and say, “I didn’t sign up for this.” The reality? Yes. We did. We did sign up for this. We signed up to teach KIDS. 🔸*That kid* who is crying every morning when they get to school? We signed up for it. 🔻*That kid* who is in the 5th grade and still can’t read? We signed up for it. 🔸*That kid* who is soiling their pants every day? We signed up for it. 🔻*That kid* who destroyed your classroom? We signed up for it. 🔸*That kid* who cussed you out last week? We signed up for it. 🔻*That kid* who ________________? We signed up for it. If what we are doing isn’t working, try something different. *That kid* is going to need a different pathway toward success - filled with more patience, more compassion, and a lot more love. Think about *that kid* in your class right now. Is your heart and mind in the right place? Don’t allow them to become a spectacle in your school, among the kids, teachers, or parents. Don’t allow them to become the topic of conversation at the lunch table. Protect them from that. Love them enough to change their story!

Students love coming to school for different reasons. Make sure you’re one of the reasons. Be patient, caring, & understanding. Someone they know has their back, but also high expectations because you want the best for them, so they reach their full potential.

How Would You Help This Student? Bryan is a new student. His file is received and it is really thick. It has a post-it note on it that says “Good Luck With This Kid”! Bryan’s file includes all of the following: -Grandfather died last month unexpectedly -Recently diagnosed with severe asthma -In the nurse’s office frequently -Easily distracted, appears bored & often off-task -Poor penmanship & writing skills -Below grade level in reading -Not meeting potential -Difficulty sitting still -Free/reduced lunch program -2 grade levels ahead in mathematics -Qualified for the gifted program at a previous school? -4 schools in the past 6 years (previous schools in Boston, Tampa, Ohio…) -Both parents work long hours – difficult to reach by phone -Loves talking about sports and enjoys PE and recess (favorite sport is tennis) Thank you for caring and helping! This was me 40 years ago! This is a big reason why I became a teacher, school principal, and then a therapist. This is why I spend my time traveling the country training educators on trauma, challenging behaviors, mental health, and problem solving. I want to do everything that I can to help other students so their education experience is way more positive than mine was!
